Question about 1985 Ford Econoline

1 Answer

I have an 85 Ford E350 chassis motorhome that won't switch to the rear gas tank. When the you flip the selector switch at the dash, you can hear a click from the transfer switch on the frame. The rear tank is full of gas. I'm sure there isn't a pickup problem in the rear tanks as the generator's gas feed comes from the rear tank, out of a tee between the tank and transfer valve, and the generator runs fine. The transfer valve is a 6 hose unit. I have heard that not switching between tanks is caused by the transfer valve. Any help would be great - espically how to test out or confirm that the the valve is good or bad!

You should be able to hear the pump in the tank running. If you don't check the fuel pump relay. If you hear the pump running then the line/filter could be plugged. The white relay is the tank selector relay, the green relay is the fuel pump relay. If the green relay is bad you will have a bad time getting the replacement. The new relays from the dealer and parts stores are all 5 pin. The green relay is a 4 pin.

Also your genset probably has a pump that pulls from that tank on its own.

I know this might sound odd but try replacing the ignition switch. I have a 86 c class e 350 and could not get the front fuel pump to run for the longest time. After changing everything else, I decided to change the ignition switch, and believe it or not the front pump came on and started working the way it is supposed to.

There is a strainer filter attached to the fuel pump in the tank however you really need to see how much gas is actually in your tank first. Sounds like a fuel line may be pinched.

Most pickup based motorhomes have 2 fuel tanks, you may have a tank selector valve that is electric or vacuum operated. Check underneath and follow the fuel lines from the tank to the front of the engine, somewhere in between you may find that the fuel hose goes to a valve that is used to switch between the 2 tanks ie: main fuel tank and auxillary fuel tank.

When I switch from my front fuel tank to my rear tank gas stops

There is no selector valve on a 1995 ford f150 300 engine. The selector switch on the dash sends power to the pump in the selected tank. The pump then sends fuel to the engine. If engine won't run on the selected switch, the pump in that tank needs replaced.
