It could be that you have to put it into neutral, but it could be your transfer case, sometimes they go bad on jeeps and that would make your front wheel drive not works. because the transfer case might have teeth missing, so when it tries to engage it doesnt catch any teeth therefore making it slip to the next tooth on the spool.

Drive train locked up while driving in 5th gear. Vehicle would not move unless clutch was engaged will in neutral.

Hi Tom:
If you're lucky, a linkage has become disengaged. Trace from the gearshift to the transmission.
What happens to the gearshift lever when you try to shift?
If it won't move and the linkage is not disconnected, try to manually move the shift levers where they enter the trans.
Also if you have a custom shifter it is possible that a pin has slipped.
Have fun chasing this one.

I have a 1995 gmc jimmy that will not go into park. It will go in all other gears and runs fine, You have to start it in Netural, does anyone know what is wrong????? please email me at...

Sounds like the linkage is bent or Way out of alignment, Also you do have plastic Bushing for the linkage to pivot on, Maybe you crack half off and the other half fell off.. If this is not your problem WE need a little more info, When did this start? Did you run over a curb? Anything that may relate to this problem

My 87 celica slips out of third gear why?

Sounds like the synchros in the transmission are getting worn out. Whe the wear out, the trans. will come out of gear going down the road unless you hold it in place. It could be time for a rebuild or replacement.

1991 sabb 900 turbo 5 speed manual trams ... I was driving down the road shifted In to fourth gear and the transmission locked up or it has something to do with the brakes .. I can put the car in gear and...

tyres thats normal thats how the dif works wheels go opposite ways. im thinking the linkage has snapped inside the gearbox. its a half circle that moves the cogs for the gears. if its locked in place then its slipped. it would need a replacement gearbox. part of it mus be broken off and in the cogs thats why its cutting the engine out it will act like a brake and just burn the clutch out if you keep doing it. replace the gear box, its lasted a long time from 1991 if its original, when fitting new gearbox replace the gearbox fluid. give the gear box a good flush out before fitting.

The transfer case keeps slipping out of gear and grinding on my 1994 surban. any ideas?

You will have to climb under and check linkage. plastic clips hold rods into place make sure they are not bent and pulling it out of gear.

While driving the car quite and the netural sign starts blinking. Change fuel pump and now it want start.

It sounds like the linkage in the transmission has slipped. Check the linkage adjustment from the gear shift to the transmission. It sounds like it has slipped into neutral, and automative transmissions will not start in neutral.
Try moving the gear shift back and forth and have a friend see if the linkage, viewable from under the hood (though you may have to remove the air box first), is moving as well. If it is, disconnect the cable off the link and manually push the arm into park. Try to start the car. If your car starts, then this is definitely the problem. Go to your local transmission dealership for information on repair.

That does sound like a linkage adjustment problem.

If that does not work, I'd try a fluid change and filter. But your diagnostics with pulling on the gear shifter is a pretty good indication of a linkage problem.

Car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

Unless you have run over something or something has hit the linkage that you may possibly repair to adjust the gear locations to their proper place on the trans, you must get trans checked out.
