1990 toyota pickup 22re engine runs hotter with ac on

1990 toyota pickup has a 22re engine. The temp gauge is reaching half to a little past half with air conditioner on. If I turn off air conditioner it will run little below half mark to half. Changed thermostat and still has the same issue. What could be the issue? I remember back in 2005 i had this same issue and the shop replaced the radiator and it ran below half mark and stayed that way with air condiotoner on. Do i need to replace the radiator again? Water pump has been replaced and it is not leaking. Do I need to flush system?

when the shop replaced the water pump they added antifreeze to the radiator. When I replaced the temp gauge I drained the radiator and added new anti freeze again just following what the shop did. Yes it gets hot here in the northern part of Calif as today will be in triple digits. My question is why then the shop put anti freeze in the radiator if it does not need it for the summer but only during the cold season? There was no radiator leak added to this at all

I will check to make sure the fan is coming on and if that works then I will flush the radiator. Thank you all for your input and if I still have the issue I will back but i sure hope not.

I would bet that your fan is not coming on. When an airconditioner is on it uses alot of power and that makes heat. The engine will warm past the safe point. Most vehicles should have a switch that turns the fan on and off to cool the motor. You can start the vehicle and pop the hood. once it gets warm if you don't see the fan come on that's most likely your problem. Be very careful around the blade because they come on and off suddenly. I go to Auto Zone for free diagnostics. They only sell parts but can walk you thru possibly fixing it yourself.

Antifreeze is an oxymoron. It is a solution that has a molecular structure that boils at a higher temp in the heat and freezes at a much lower temperature than water. This way you get protection for extreme hot and cold. I think they did the right thing. It has to be disposed of correctly so it's easier and cheaper to have them do it. I have two expensive vehicles and I go buy the parts first and then go to my mechanic. Sometimes you get off brands or rebuilds you may not know about but are paying full price.

Just be very careful when you are around the fan with the motor on. If there is a problem and it suddenly comes on you will be in a world of hurt. Good luck

If your car is running hot after replacing the thermostat try flushing the radiator which will usually make the car run cooler. Antifreeze raises the temperature of cars a bit and is not needed during the summer months if you live in a warm area. Make sure you put some in though by the time it becomes winter. There may be a lot of gunk in there that is causing it to heat up especially if any radiator leak was ever added to the system.

Have 22re engine - truck runs great cold when warms up starts cuttin out?

i would look at the temp sensor. i believe when they fail, they peg out all the way cold or all the way hot. so your truck thinks it is still cold when you have reached operating temps, causeing your misfire.

1992 toyota 22re fluids out and puts out a lot of fume out the exhast

Floods out.Multiple causes. How does it run when warmed up?Still stink?
Check injectors: Run the engine up to 3,000 RPM and turn off the key, while flooring the gas pedal. If engine still runs, the injector(s) are stuck open.
Also check for a vacuum leak-that will cause the engine to run very rich.
Also may be an open circuit in the temp sensor(computer side). The engine may think it's very cold and richen up the mixture.

1990 toyota pickup with 22re engine and 235000 miles failed smog in cali.,not because of emissions but because timing was at 30 degrees instead of 10. It starts and runs well. I have not adjusted timing ....

Reset the engine timing by first jumping pins E1 and Te1 in the grey box under the hood. If the truck runs poorly set to proper timing, your timing chain has jumped a tooth. Does it rattle bad at idle? Id so, the guides are worn out, and the chain is stretched.

1993 TOYOTA PICKUP (V6) TEMPERATURE PROBLEM

the trans will not allow overdrive until coolant reaches roughly 180 degrees, if the guage shows cool and the trans is not upshifting, or downshifts to third while driving. the problem is either a sticking (or missing) thermostat. follow the lower radiator hose to the engine and find the three 12mm nuts, remove these to get to it. a new toyota t-stat will have a little bleed valve on its face. position it upwards when installing. hope this is helpful.
P.S. Happy New Year

THIS is normal on a lot of import engines. you have a pcv valve that pulls vacuum on engine to **** out gases. when you remove the cap it is like a vacuum leak. if engine runs fine otherwise it is normal.
