Question about 2006 Toyota RAV4
Like most guys, I think, I keep my car keys in my hip pocket, along with loose change, other keys, and a small pocketknife. The soft rubber covering the harder plastic buttons began to deform after 6 months, and now is worn through. I checked the dealer, and although their parts lookup database shows a replacement key (sans electronic transmitter), priced at ~$21.00, it won't "allow" the dealer to order it separately. The whole key is $180, plus a $70 "programming charge" to make the new transmitter do what mine already does.
I noticed there are TSBs for the keys, but the dealer won't show them to me. Wonder if they're related to my problem.
This is aggravating, and expensive. I'm temporarily using the key with electrician's tape holding the buttons in place. Seems like a great aftermarket opportunity!
Can anyone help? Are there other Toyota keys with a compatible replacement keypad that _can_ be purchased?
Yeah... I've always managed to carry enough junk
in my pockets to equip a small hardware store...
I've achieved a small level of competence (not Toyota's FOBs)
but a friend was awestruck by the (Infinity) dealers
hideous prices... Went onto eBay and found the cases
he needed... (did it himself (no programming required)).
Following his lead... I have become a FORD/LINCOLN...
Jaguar... and "Clifford" FOB CASE expert
for the family...
I have every confidence... you will find your CASE
available... Keep a close eye on "NEW & USED"
and always check your shipping costs...
My latest quest is to crack open the BMW X5 (E70)...
Just because mine looks like it was dragged down a gravel road on a logging chain... (got a good looking USED) ONE....
free shipping less than $10...
Best double-sided PATS KEY "CUT" price
to date = $6
Worst was $25 (and he ruined a good new $25 logo blank)...
Still worlds ahead of the DEALER PRICES...!!!
Have yet to pry THE BMW open... but hey...
It needs replacing (anyway)
Look at eBay... or AMAZON
and HAPPY hunting.

SOURCE: Transponder Key Programming
Keys are not all the same, it is possible the key you bought may not work, it should be searched by VIN by the dealer, and the dealer has to program with factory scan tool, should cost no more than .5 hours in labor.

I doubt this is a smart key problem, the key uses a chip and its own battery. Something in the car is causing a drain, a light is staying on possibly. Trunk light, glove box light, under hood light... maybe you have a portable GPS unit plugging into the auxilary port? Just a thought. This is not a common problem that has been reported by Avalon owners as of yet.

On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls. Then you can access the bolts that secure the mirror onto the door
