I need to remove the a/c compressor pulley/clutch assembly. Where do I start? Please help?

For one, be careful. It is unlawful to vent freon into the atmosphere. You will need special tools to remove and install new clutch. Then the system has to be leak tested, pulled into a vacuum and recharged with a specific amount of refrigerant. and a measure amount of oil added if needed. Are you sure you want to even think about taking it apart? Are you even sure the clutch is bad? Give it some thought, for your sake. Give it some serious thought.

    1. Hold the A/C disc and hub assembly (19D786) with the special tool.

  1. NOTE: If installing a new A/C compressor, the A/C clutch components should be reused unless obvious signs of damage are found. If excessive grooving is found, a new A/C clutch disc and hub and A/C compressor pulley must be installed together. Otherwise, each component can be installed individually where needed.
    Visually inspect the A/C clutch disc and hub, A/C compressor pulley and A/C clutch field coil for damage.
    • Inspect for physical damage, including cracked or melted components or discoloration due to excessive heat.
    • Inspect for excessive wear, including grooving in the A/C clutch disc and hub or A/C compressor pulley that is more than fingernail depth.
    • Inspect for roughness in the A/C compressor pulley bearing.
  1. Clean the A/C disc and field coil and pulley mounting surfaces.

How to remove and reinstall a clutch on an a/c compressor



The AC compressor continued to turn even after I pulled the 12-volt supply wire to the unit. The AC compressor exhibited no unusual symptoms that would explain the locked clutch, there was no bearing failure, no unusual noise, On the contrary, the AC continued to work properly. The Jaguar cooled as good or better than the other cars I currently own, all of which have original factory 134a AC systems. uses the GM A6 compressor, a common compressor used by a variety of General Motor's cars I was not about to disassemble a perfectly working AC system because of a defective clutch. The project starts by removing the hood. Clearance in the Jaguar engine bay is non-existent. In addition, the AC compressor is located 3 inches from the radiator top support. it is possible to do this with the hood on you will regret it. The objective is to replace the AC clutch on the car. Remove the AC compressor's front and rear bolts only. Lift the front of the compressor up to clear the top radiator support. Do not depressurize the system or remove any hoses.
Remove the center 9/16-inch nut from the compressor shaft. A special clutch holding tool is not needed if an air impact wrench is used.
install the clutch removal tool. The clutch is "press fit" to the AC compressor front shaft.
Instead of a clutch holding tool, I used a bar resting on the engine (blue arrow) to hold the tool removal nut while I turned the center stud that forces the clutch off.
The pulley is now completely visible. You will need a large snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring that secures the pulley.
Notice the towel below the compressor. Snap rings (red arrow) have a habit of flying off the pliers and disappearing forever into the engine. You are farned
The pulley is a zero clearance fit to the compressor nose. If you are lucky it will slide off by pulling on it. You will probably not be lucky. I used a puller to remove the pulley. Be careful here. You must identify what the puller can and cannot push against. The center compressor shaft must not be used as leverage to pull or push any component not on the compressor shaft. A 1 1/8-inch, 1/2-in drive socket (red arrow) will fit over the center shaft and rests on the compressor nose cone. This is my leverage point. I taped a large washer (blue arrow) to the socket to provide a contact point for the puller.
Attach puller jaws in the pulley groves and place the modified washer to rest against the nose cone. Slowly tighten the puller to remove pulley.
Locate and secure pulley key. If the key stays on the compressor shaft, do not remove it. An even bigger snap ring secures the coil assembly to the compressor. Remove the snap ring.
Remove coil assembly.
The clutch release springs (blue arrows) also appear to be in working order.
Testing the resistance of the coil assemblies indicate that they are within specs. The old coil pack reads 4.8 ohms.
The rebuilt coil pack reads 4.5 ohms.
In removing the clutch it appeared the coil was permanently energized. The clutch removal tool had to forcefully pull the clutch from the pulley. I was not about to put this coil pack back on. I cleaned the contacts on the rebuilt unit prior to installation.
Gently clean the nose cone remove any surface rust. the clutch bearing rides on this surface, it must not be damaged.
connect coil pack to compressor and install. Make sure the coil pack is attached properly to the electrical connector. There are three indicators on the rear of the coil pack that must match the corresponding holes in the compressor body (red arrow). Install big snap ring.
Clean pulley surface and install pulley. The bearing might require some slight persuasion to slide onto the nose cone. Use a drift (red arrow) that contacts the inner ring of the bearing only. Tap gently until the pulley bearing seats.
Install second snap ring. Make sure that the snap ring seats fully in the shaft grove. Tap the snap ring fully into the groove with a screwdriver if necessary. (red arrow)
Clean clutch mating surface and install clutch to the compressor. Note position of shaft key and corresponding clutch key slot. (red arrows). Make sure they line up before installing clutch to compressor shaft.
use the clutch installation tool. The front of the tool (blue arrow) screws over the threads of the exposed 9/16-inch shaft stud (yellow arrow). The nut then forces the bearing (red arrow)against the clutch face, forcing it onto the compressor shaft. One side of the bearing rotates with the nut to reduce friction as it forces the clutch onto the shaft. Note that the forces all act on the compressor shaft, not against it.
Hold the center bolt while tightening the nut down.
You are looking for a pulley clearance of .010 to .015. If you inadvertently create too close a gap, put the clutch puller back on and pull the clutch out accordingly. Replacement and or rebuilt parts are rarely perfect. You will probably get different readings at various locations around the circumference of the clutch. If the closest gap is .010 or more and the largest gap is .015 or less you are OK.
Install 9/16-inch self-locking nut and tighten. If a clutch holding tool is not available, then finish tightening this nut after the compressor belt is on and the clutch energized. This nut does not hold on or impacts the position of the clutch. It appears to be a safety precaution just in case the press fit clutch somehow comes off the compressor shaft.
Install compressor to engine. Tighten 4 bolts to engine bracket. Connect electrical connections to coil assembly. Install belts.
Turn on your vehicle and let there be cold air, good luck sorry illustrations wouldn't load to this format

My 2002 neon's A/C blows warm air. The vent pressure is working well- but it blows warmer than the outside air. Can I fix this myself? What might the problem be?


If you are handy, yes you can. Most likely causes are loss of freon which would prevent the compressor clutch from being engaged and operating the compressor, a lack of 12 volts being applied to the compressor clutch because the a/c compressor fuse or relay has failed, preventing the clutch from engaging the compressor, or the compressor clutch itself failing. Easy test is to watch the compressor pulley with the motor running. The pulley will, of course be spinning, but the circular assembly mounted to the front of the pulley will spin with the pulley only when the compressor is engaged. There is a sensor mounted to the a/c line that prevents the clutch from engaging the compressor if there in not enough freon in the system. You could go to auto zone or checker and buy a can of freon r-134 with a hose for around $15.00. It is fairly easy to follow the instructions to charge the system. If, after allowing some of the can to pressurize the system, the compressor clutch engages then you can continue to charge the system. Cold air should start to blow by the time the can is empty. Or you can locate the a/c relay located in the fuse panel, remove its plastic cover and manually close the contacts while observing the compressor pulley assembly. If the clutch doesn't engage then the problem in probably electrical, a fuse, the relay or the electric clutch itself. Go to auto zone and check you their dvd on a/c repair for under $9.00. Step 1


Locate and remove the compressor clutch retaining bolt. Looking at the compressor clutch you will see a bolt in the center and three bolts along the outer edge. The center bolt is the retaining bolt. The three bolts around the edge of the clutch can only be accessed after removing the clutch, and are only relevant in clutch repair situations. To remove the retaining bolt you need to maintain the clutch position and relieve pressure from bolt head by applying the compressor clutch holding tool with your other hand, or have an assistant hold the tool in place. Do not lose the retaining bolt in case you need to reference it later.


Step 2


Separate and remove the clutch from the shaft of the compressor. Once the retaining bolt is removed, as described in Step 1, simply pry the clutch away from the mounting surface using your hands. If the clutch is a little difficult to remove due to damage or decay then try using a screwdriver to lightly pry the rear side of the clutch away. Spray the area with an auto lubricant and allow it to sit overnight if needed. While removing the clutch do not lose clutch spacers.


Step 3


Pull the snap ring from the clutch pulley using your snap ring pliers. You will now be able to remove the clutch pulley from the compressor. While everything is apart, and before installing your new compressor clutch, clean the area to remove dust or grime.


Reverse steps to install.

Are you certain that it's the clutch assembly?
Check the idler pulley. Poor tension in the idler pulley spring will cause the belt to squeal AT THE ALTERNATOR, and it may sound like it's coming from the AC.
The AC pulley typically "freewheels" when the AC is not on and the engine is running.
Have someone turn the AC on and off while the engine is running and watch the operation of the AC clutch. If it's working properly, the clutch should "click" and the back part of the pulley should start turning or try to turn.
If the squealing noise continues when the clutch is freewheeling, it's probably the idler pulley. If the AC Pulley won't start freewheeling, it's probably the clutch.
To remove the clutch system,
  • disengage the idler pulley and remove the serpentine belt from one of the pulleys.
  • rent, purchase or borrow a puller from a local auto parts retailer (Auto Zone and O'Reilly auto parts are both helpful)
  • some of the clutch systems have retaining bolts, some are just pressed in, figure out what you have before removing the clutch assembly using the puller.
  • The puller is also designed to help put the NEW clutch assembly back on the shaft.
The idler pulley assembly is a lot easier to replace.

There's not really a diagram for the actual removal and installation. A good repair manual might list steps like these: First, your system needs to be purged of the freon. Next, unplug the AC clutch/pulley assembly at the front of the compressor. Remove the belt, then the AC lines on the compressor (usually in the back), then unbolt the AC from any mounting bracket(s) and remove. To avoid having to press on and off the clutch/pulley assembly you might want to make sure you're buying a complete compressor assembly. Read and follow those directions concerning oil for the compressor. After installing the new AC, reconnect the lines with new "O" rings. Most if not all compressor manufacturers will not honor any warranty unless you change out your orifice tube (also called an expansion valve) and accumulator (aka the dryer) at the same time. Recharge the system with the appropriate amount and type of freon, most likely R-134a.

bypassing the compressor is best to do. get a belt for your engine less the ac option. the removal and tear down of any compressor is not easy for a novice

on the 3.8 liter v6, the pulley on the a/c compressor can be replaced if it is locked up (frozen) on the compressor. the question is what is actually locked up? if the a/c compressor is locked up but the a/c compressor pulley turns, then you need to disconnect the wire harness connecter that is on the a/c compressor pulley/clutch so you can run the defrost on the climate control. many GM cars will run the a/c when you switch the climate control to defrost especially in the winter so the a/c system stays lubed and does not lock up the a/c compressor from lack of use. you can then relace the belt without replacing the compressor pulley/clutch assembly. if the compressor pulley/clutch assembly is locked up, it will need to be replaced. i do not believe there is a way to route the belt bypassing the a/c compressor. you dont want the water pump turning in the wrong direction if you reroute the belt wrong or the engine will overheat. i hope this helps!
