Question about 1996 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

1996 Grand Am intermittently will not let me turn off ignition

When I go to turn off car, it will intermittently not do it. I have put it into all the gears, I have automatic transmission. Then move the car back and forward and then maybe after 3-4 times I can turn the car off. Seems to work better after I get an oil change. Any idea what might be wrong or how to fix?

Hi..my name is Keith..and if i had to guess without being there to see it for myself..i would guess it to be the ignition switch..and the ignition switch isnt what you put your key into..that is just a lock..and when you rotate that..it pulls on a rod that actuates the real ignition switch..and that switch sounds like it has bad contacts in it..i hope this will help

Instructions
  1. Programming the First Transmitter
    • 1

Unlock all of the Jeepicon1.png Grand Cherokee's doors and open the driver's side door. Keeping the door open, lock it using the manual lock on the door itself.

    • 2

Put the manual key into the ignition and switch it to the "On" or "Run" position, whichever applicable, without starting the engine.

    • 3

Point the remote at the receiver (located by the little bulb on the caricon1.png ceiling) and hold down the "Lock" button for up to 5 seconds.

    • 4

When the driver's side door unlocks, you know the remote has been programmed correctly. If you are only programming one remote, jump to the next step. If not, manually re-lock the driver's side door and repeat steps 5 and 6 using each remote you would like to program and then continue.

Turn the key to the "Off" position and turn the ignition on immediately. This must be done within 20 seconds of programming the last remote. You're finished!

My 1996 jeep wants to turn over but dose not i put a new crank shaft sensor and a ignition coil and it wants to fire but dose not

Have you had your ecu checked out? Does your check engine light come on, on the dash, when you turn the ignition key to on? If that light does not come on, your ecu might need to be repaired.

1997 Grand Cherokee 4.0, ignition shuts down sometimes backfires and keeps going, or dies completely and hopefully starts up.already replaced coil and crank sensor.

The likely answer to your problem is that you have an intermittent disconnect in the ignition system. If power supply to the ignition system drops out, some fuel still goes through and when power returns it ignites in the exhaust resulting in a backfire. I would look for a bad ignition switch, or other loose connection that could me making/breaking contact intermittently.

I WAS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, YOU HAVE TO TURN THE IGNITION OFF, GET OUT OF THE CAR, LOCK YOUR DOOR WITH THE KEY AND THEN UNLOCK IT. THAT IS ONE WAY , IF THAT DOESNT WORK PUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AT THE SAME TIME TURN THE IGNITION SWITCH AND PRESS AND HOLD KILL SWITCH UNDER STEERING COLUMN, BEHIND FUSE BOX

that could be the problem, but as long as its going to the dealer to fix that have them put an ignition switch in too. there has been alot of people having the same problem such as yours, and i know alot of times that switch is the problem.
