    well it is going somewhere, suspect it is burning oil, lack of visable smoke means nothing on cars with catalytic converters.

Check the spark plugs for signs of oil burning, have a compression or better, a leakdown test done. Possible rings were incorrectly installed. or, cylinder walls were not refinished properly.

Blue smoke indicates that your engine is burning oil and at for your leak. Might want to perform a complete engine cleaning with a steam cleaner and determine where the oil leak is coming from.

Smokes on start up


Smokes blue on cold startup = leaking valve seals, which really don't affect drivability if it stops 1-2 seconds after startup. To fix you need new valve seals/heads rebuilt.

If it smokes while under load, then the rings are worn, letting oil seep past the rings into the compustion chamber.

Have you let this car run low on oil? Leaking valve seals usually present themselves if the car has been sitting a while, drying out the seals/cracking them. Worn rings should only present themselves after very very high milage, such as 300,000 miles or more. Somebody has not changed the oil on a regular basis, or just never changed the oil, or only changed the oil like every 20,000 miles.

To bring your engine back to normal, you will have to overhaul the engine and have the heads rebuilt as well.

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L, oil leak ontop of engine, around and infront of oil fill hole.


Gasket/O-ring bad on the oil fill cap. The fan is throwing it around where you've found the excess.

But your Jeep does have a PCV valve, that if stuck or sticking will **** a quart of oil out and through your exhaust without even a sign. The only real sign and that's slim, is hose that connects to PCV valve may have an oil coating in it.

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.7 V-8. It burns oil aprox 1 Qt a week. The driver told me she sees white smoke from the exhaust when the A/C is on. I did not think the problem was related to...


I think, the bearing of the A/C unit jam and putting extra load on the engine or the belt that connects to the engine has dried out. Logically, A/C has no direct connection with the engine exhaust.

look on your drive,are you starting your own slick,cos the US govt will bill you.....but if you are burning oil BP would like to hear from you...and you would have put so much smoke into the air, birds would need radar to see, otherwise look under the hood and see if you have a leak etc...and get back to us.

Blue smoke


Blue smoke is never a good thing....

Blue smoke is caused by engine oil entering the cylinder area and being burned along with the fuel air mixture. As with the white smoke, just a small drop of oil leaking into the cylinder can produce blue smoke out the tailpipe. Blue smoke is more likely in older or higher mileage vehicles than newer cars with fewer miles.
How did the engine oil get inside the cylinder in the first place? The car has many seals, gaskets, and O-rings that are designed to keep the engine oil from entering the cylinder, and one of them has failed. If too much oil leaks into the cylinder and fouls the spark plug, it will cause a misfire (engine miss) in that cylinder, and the spark plug will have to be replaced or cleaned of the oil. Using thicker weight engine oil or an oil additive designed to reduce oil leaks might help reduce the amount of oil leaking into the cylinder.

your engine has worn valve guides, piston rings An engine that burns a lot of oil (more than a quart in 500 miles) is an engine that needs to be overhauled. Normal oil consumption should be a quart or less in 1500 miles. Most newer engines consume less than half a quart of oil between oil changes (every 3000 miles). So if your engine is burning oil, it's essentially worn out and needs to be repaired.
Because the cost of overhauling or replacing an engine often exceeds the value of an older car or truck, many people will just keep on driving a "mosquito fogger" in spite of the blue clouds of smoke it leaves behind. Never mind the pollution it causes, oil is cheaper than a new or rebuilt engine they reason. That philosophy may be okay if you live out in the sticks somewhere. But in urban areas that require periodic vehicle emissions testing, an engine that's burning oil usually won't pass the test because of excessive hydrocarbon (HC) emissions. You may get by on a waiver after you've spent some money (in vain) on a tune-up, but the fact remains you're still a polluter.
An engine that burns a lot of oil will also eventually foul the spark plugs. Thick, black oily deposits build up on the plugs until they cease to fire. Then the engine misfires and loses power. Cleaning or changing the plugs may temporarily solve the problem, but sooner or later they'll foul out again.
Forget about "miracle" oil additives or pills that claim to stop oil burning. They don't. Better to save your money and put it towards a valve job and new set of rings.

Have u verified the oil pressure with a mechanical guage? this may just be a sending unit, if the engine had no pressure the lifters would be rattling like crazy at idle.
