Question about 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

All the brake lights will not come on when pressing brake pedal

All the brake lights will not come on after changing brake light switch. What else should I check? I also smelt a burning smell about a week or 2 prior to all brake lights going out.

Make sure the brake switch is working. Leave it hooked to the wire harness and work it by hand while someone checks the lights. If the switch works it just needs to be repositioned on the pedal and adjusted. If it doesn't work, check the fuse. If the fuse is burnt or burns out again you have a burnt wire. Start tracing them out one at a time looking for a burn mark. I'd start with the power wire first. It's usually red or orange,it's the most likely problem. Cut out the burnt piece and splice it back together. Tape it up well and look for anything it could rub on to prevent this from re-occuring. This should get you back on the road.

I have a 91 Accord, the brake light on the dash is on. I have changed the bulbs and the fuse under the hood, still nothing, park lights and signal lights work just fine. is there another fuse or something...

There is a switch that the brake pedal operates and that signals the brake light to come on, it is called a brake light sending switch. There are times when the switch just needs to be readjusted, and you can do that, if you are looking up at the brake pedal, press on it with your hand, and you will see the pedal move toward the switch. There is a little *** on the switch that the brake pedal touches, if the pedal and switch are not in alignment, then the switch needs to be repositioned, if they are lined up, and the *** on the switch is being pressed when the brake pedal is pushed, then it needs to be replaced. They are inexpensive, and quite easy to replace.

My break light swithes on sometimes without me even pressing the breaks. The break light also sometimes stays on even when I have taken my feet off the break. I have tried changed the break light switch...

Did you adjust the brake light switch correctly? To adjust the brake light switch, first press the brake pedal down a few inches, then pull the switch plunger rod out of the switch toward the brake pedal arm, as far as you can without using excessive force. Next, return the brake pedal to the pedal stop position against the pedal stop and pull the brake pedal toward the rear to push the brake light switch actuating plunger rod into the switch housing limited by the travel of the brake pedal arm rear travel stop position. This procedure automatically adjusts the brake light switch correctly.
If the brake lights still don't turn off with the brake pedal released, check the brake pedal arm for sticking or binding that is preventing the brake pedal arm from returning fully to the pedal stop when the brake is released.

I have a 1990 Lexus 250 ES. Brake lights inop.

check the brake pedal switch by connecting a test light to it and ground.

When the pedal depresses you might hear a click or see the button depress.

The test light should light or not light changing as you press and release the pedal.

Another way to do this is to change the brake pedal switch and see if it works.

I hope this helps.

No brake lights

There is a switch under the brake pedal ,probably this has gone ,you must change it,when you press the brake pedal, the pedal hits the switch then it lights the brake bulb ,check for this switch.

My brake light doesn't work. I have changed the fuse and bulb. No luck.

Look above your brake pedal and you will see your brake switch up along your brake pedal arm. It will either be between the brake arm and the firewall so when you brake it pushes the switch in. Or it will be between the dash and the brake arm so when you brake it pulls the switch out. Most likely this switch needs to be replaced

Brake lights stay on

I believe this is most likely a faulty or stuck brake light switch. The lights are actuated when depressing the brake pedal thus closing the circuit in the switch usually attached to the upper end of the pedal near the hinge.
