Not really what I meant. To be more specific, do you know if the engine has to be lifted to remove the pan or can it be done on a lift?

  • jrolivero Jun 26, 2009

thanks very much for the info. I guess that's bad news for me as i have no way to lift the engine. Stupid design - yes?

    Thanks again

Get yourself a chilton or haynes manual. Not terribly difficult, but way too long to write out here!!!

On most, engine should be lifted a bit to get better clearance. when doing that, make sure you don't lift it too high or it will break stuff on top. Best way is to disconnect engine mounts and put blocks between mounts and block or use a lift bar to keep motor in place.

You can usually rent or make an engine lift bar (goes across both fenders and holds/lifts engine with a turnbuckle or through bolt) Or, before you begin, you can put a jack under the pan, disconnect mounts and with a piece of plywood between jack and pan to prevent damage, lift the engine and use blocks between mounts and engine to keep it there after you remove the jack.

Easiest way to drop the oil pan out of a '91 firebird without hoisting the engine up? Can you drop the cross member that prevents it from being able to drop straight down to remove the oil pan?

Don't think it can be done dude,by the time you disconnect everything(including the tranny)
to get enough clearance for the pan,you may as well pull it the rest of the way, crossmember is not removable.

this can be an engine destroying problem, it is already to late if the engine is really noisy, get the oil pump replaced and cross your fingers that it is not to late for the engine.
