First check the fluid but when its low it will make a whining sound so not that likely if you are not hearing anything. the way to check the fluid is to take the cap of the resevoir and it has a dipstick on it. the resevoir is on the power steering pump which on your car i believe is on the belt side of the engine between the engine and the firewall. what is most likely your problem is that your pump is worn out and needs to be changed.

Hello, This could be an indication your A/C is low on Freon or your Power Steering pump is low on fluid. Both systems are made to increase the idle speed to make the system work better. What happens in the case of the A/C, is the A/C compressor puts a strain on the motor when it engages the electric clutch on the compressor.
The A/C is wired such that when the compressor clutch engages, the engine RPM is increased to maintain the idle speed. The controls do this automatically and when your compressor is low of Freon, there is little resistance and the engine overspeeds. You are burning up your compressor if you lose the lubricant packaged inside it. That noise you hear is a dry compressor.
Turn your A/C or Defroster off and see if the overspeed and the noise stop. The compressor will run in the Defrost cycle too! Eventually your A/C will lose more of the Freon until the low pressure switch cuts the power to the compressor completely.
Some front wheel drive cars have a boost sensor in the power steering assembly for increasing the idle speed when you are turning the steering at low speeds. If the fluid level is low, it tricks the sensor into speeding up the idle to assist steering. Like in the A/C example, you can get overspeed when the fluid levels are low.
I hope my solution is very helpful in fixing your problem. Have your Freon checked or throw in an "OIL Charge" with the proper type of oil for your compressor. Then check your Power steering.

Variable-assist power steering: A power steering system that uses valves and speed sensors to vary the amount of steering assist according to engine or road speed. At slow speeds more steering assist is delivered and steering the wheels is easier; necessary for parking, etc.. At higher speeds, steering assist is reduced and more steering effort is required to steer the car, giving the driver greater feel of the road. Also known as Speed-sensitive power steering.
Loss of current to the magnetic coils would cause a loss of power assist at low speed. Coil resistance can be checked with an ohmmeter, and should read about two ohms. An infinite (open) reading indicates a bad coil (requires replacing the rack since the coils are not serviceable). Checking for shorts between both sides of the coil assembly and rack housing is also recommended.
YOU NEED TO BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM BY HAVING LOW FLUID AIR ENTER THE SYSTEM.PARK CAR ON SOLID LEVEL GROUND SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT VECHICLE ON JACK STANDS.YOU CAN LEAVE CAR ON GROUND BUT TURNING STEERING WHEELS BACK AND FORTH WILL WEAR SPOT IN TIRES.TURN STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT WITH THE ENGINE OFF.CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID.ADD MORE FLUID IF LOW.MAKE SURE FLUID LEVEL ON COLD MARK ON DIP STICK.THE YOU CRANK CAR UP LET IDLE LITTLE HIGH FOR 15 SECONDS.THEN TURN OFF ENGINE.CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL MAKE SURE ITS ON COLD MARK AT DIP STICK.THEN YOU START THE CAR UP WHILE IDLING TURN STEERING WHEEL IN BOTH DIRECTIONS SLOWLY TO THE STOPS DONT HOLD IN STOP TURN STEERING WHEEL LEFT AND RIGHT FOR SEVERAL TURNS.STOP ENGINE CHECK FLUID IF FLUID TAN STILL HAS AIR IN SYSTEM.LET CAR SET A LITTLE WHILE TRY THE BLEEDING PROCEDURE AGAIN.THERE IS A REASON POWER STEERING FLUID WAS LOW CHECK ALL POWER STEERING HOSES AT POWER STEERING PUMP TO THE RACK PINION ASSEMBLY.
Worn steering components which allow the steering wheels to travel too far either way,hop underneath and get a friend to move the steering while you have a look for movement between the components, or a power steering component like relief valve. Its a bit hard to know without seeing the vehicle, i suggest a steering and suspension specialist like pedders or similar.These guys can do a safety inspection only, if you want to do the work yourself. if you are turning the wheel all the way until it stops then you are putting the steering pump in a bind cuasing the engine to slow down more causing the engine to stall ,,, recommend you turn the steering wheel all the way you are going until the wheel stops and then back the other way a little bit to stop this binding,, shoulsd stop your problem
FIRST OF ALL YOU HAVE TO REMOVE POWER STEERING FLUID.USING A SUCTION GUN OR LARGE SYRINGE.REMOVE MUCH FLUID AS POSSIBLE.WHEN DONE REMOVING POWER STEERING FLUID.YOU NEED A INLINE WRENCH AND OPEN BOX END WRENCH TO REMOVE THE POWER STEERING HOSE.YOU HAVE TO REMOVE POWER STEERING LINE FROM THE RACK.UNDER THE CAR SAFELY RAISE AND SUPPORT VECHICLE. THEN REMOVE THE TIRE OR WHEEL.THEN REMOVE THE INNER FENDER SPLASH SHIELD.ITS GOING TO BE A TIGHT FIT AND HARD PLACE TO GET YOUR HAND TO REMOVE THE POWER STEERING LINE FROM BOTTOM.WHEN DONE.MAKE SURE NEW POWER STEERING HOSE OR LINE HAS NEW O RINGS.WHEN INSTALLING THE THE NEW STEERING HOSE.WHEN ALL IS DONE BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM. FILL UP POWER STEERING PUMP TO CORRECT FLUID LEVEL.THEN LET IT SET FOR 2 MINUTES UNDISTURBED.THEN START THE ENGINE RUN IT FOR 2 TO 3 SECONDS.ONLY CHECK THE RESERVOIR AND ADD MORE FLUID AS NECESSARY.REPEAT THE OPERATION UNTIL THE FLUID LEVEL REMAIN CONSTANT.NOW RAISE FRONT OF THE CAR UNTIL THE WHEELS CLEAR THE GROUND START THE ENGINE AND INCREASE THE SPEED TO ABOUT 1500 RPM.NOW TURN THE STEERING WHEEL GENTLY FROM STOP TO STOP CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL.LOWER THE VECHICLE TO THE GROUND WITH ENGINE STILL RUNNING MOVE THE CAR FORWARD SUFFICIENTY TO OBTAIN FULL RIGHT LOCK FOLLOWED BY FULL LEFT LOCK BUT DONT HOLD THE SREERING WHEEL FIRMLY AGAINST THE STOPS.RECHECK THE FLUID LEVEL IF THE FLUID IN THE RESERVOIR IS EXTREMELY FOAMY ALLOW THE CAR TO STAND FOR A FEW MINUTES.WITH ENGINE OFF.WHEN JOB IS FINISH. WARNING DONT DRIVE CAR ON ROAD IF YOUR FLUID STILL FOAMY OR POWER STEERING PUMP MAKE NOISES.REBLEED THE SYSTEM AND CHECK FLUID LEVEL AND CHECK FOR LEAKS.DONT DRIVE CAR UNTIL YOU START FEELING NORMAL STEERING.IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE DONT DRIVE.HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST GARAGE.
Support front wheels off ground. Chock rear tires, get an assistant for safty. Start engine (do not put in gear) step outside of car and manually turn wheels left and right by hand. Cut off engine. Turn key back to release steering lock. Manually turn wheels by hand again. If it requires the same ammount of strength to turn wheels, then Rack and Pinion is bypassing internally. Solution... replace rack & pinion.
