Question about Toyota Avalon

01 avalon-the steering lock engages while driving.also once engaged it does not release when key is turned to on position. I need to know what monitors the engagement and if it is mechanical or hydraulic. Is the 2 pole electrical devise below the ignition switch housing just a solenoid or is it a position sensor as well. Thank you very much

Some one at the dealer needs to address this deriously dangerous malfuction without charge to you and you would be wise to report it and have it on record in the event someone gets injured. They won't believe you after the fact. Consumer Safety Commission in your state.

Ignition switch will not engage/turn to start car

Hi Beth usually when shifter is stuck there is a locking mechanism and keeps shifter from engaging unless brake is depressed to release the lock. If you hear a clicking sound when pedal is depressed then switch is probably ok and its probably the steering wheel lock. First try with your spare key to start the vehicle(old key may be worn ). If that doesn't do it then try with WD 40 a very little in ignition key hole or on the key work it slowly and see what happens. If none of these suggestions work its probably the steering wheel lock and that requires surgery. Keep me post best of luck

Key stuck in ignition

Make sure that the shifter is fully engaged in park and that the steering wheel is in the locked position. Also you can check to make sure that there isn't a small lever on the steering column that you need to push to release the key. Lastly you could try to step on the brake put the car in neutral and put the key in the off position and then gently pull out.

KEY WON'T TURN ON THE IGNITION

Hi Aldene, Your vehicle seems too young to have a problem with a worn key so I suggest that the problem was related to the position of the steering wheel and the tongue of the locking mechanism. Sometimes when the lock engages it is under the load of the weight of the front wheels, if they are not in the straight ahead position. A small movement of the steering wheel is usually enough to release the steering lock. Regards John

My key wont turn in the ingnition of my 1998 toyota avalon

Hi, the problem you could be having is with the steering lock, if this has locked in a funny position it can be hard to get it to unlock.

what you need to do is when you put the key in try turning the steering wheel left and right as far as it will go whilst turning the key to on position, now its going to be hard to move so you will need to use some force turning the wheel try turning it left whilst turning the key forwards and backwards and the same turning right, once the steering wheel has moved this should allow the key to turn and you will be able to start you car.

let me know if it fails to work then i can assist you further ok

plz rate this solution as i have got a whole page of posts that have gone unrated, thanks

I have power going to instrument panel, fuel pump and injectors when I crank my key , but will not turn over. Took off molding and insultion under steering column to get at ignition switch which is a 3...

Let's start with something simple. Have someone turn the key to the "crank" position while you tap the starter with a hammer to see if it engages. You will probably see that it will engage and start. If this becomes the case, replace the starter. If you need instructions, let me know and I can get these to you.

Key stuck in ignition and cannot get key out

try turning the steering wheel off it's lock. The wheel should turn a tiny bit between stops and if you turn it to the middle it should release the key. If this doesn't wrok mae sure that the transmission gear shift is fully engaged in Park (assuming an automatic transmission)

The ignition will not shut off and key sticks will not release

Although you have probably done this already, apply a steady, firm pull to the key while turning the steering wheel back and forth.
Some ignition locks are coupled to the steering lock so that one can't remove the key unless the lock is engaged.
If that doesn't work, I would remove the top plastic shell around the steering assembly and look for a good place to apply some penetrating lubricant.   If the steering lock pin is not engaging it may just have gotten sticky and is not pushing into the mating hole.

A4 steering lock does not engage and car won't turn over

The steering locks don't necessarily engage when the key is removed, I always turn the wheel before exiting to engage it. There are several positions that will allow the pin to lock in but if between these, it may seem that it isn't locked.
