I have a 95 thunderbird and i can tell you that the fuel pump is probably the most labor intensive on any vehicle since you have to remove the driveshaft and exhaust to remove the fuel tank. a shop will probably charge you $500 to $1000 to replace it.

I have a 2004 grand am. the motor turns over but wont start. I changed the fuel pump, the ignition is good, fuses are all good but it will not start

first check the fuel filter. check before and after the filter if you get fuel before it then check after it, no fuel before go back to the pump. if you get fuel after then go to the fuel rail on the motor. open the line before the pressure regulator, if you get fuel then check after the regulator, if none after then the regulator is bad, if the regulator is vacuum assisted check your vacuum.

Your fuel pump may have gone bad. You can remove the air filter housing and spray some carb cleaner into it while somebody cranks the engine. If it starts, you know it has a fuel problem.

The car ran out of gas, and after putting new gas in the car it started up then died. I took it to a mechanic he said he tapped on the fuel pump and it started right up, but suggested I replace the pump....

yes. the pump has gone out on the car it is a comon problem on chevy's it is located in the fuel tank under the car. get ready to spend some money they ain't cheap and I would recomend replacing your fuel filter every other oil change because its the life of the fuel pump. and the aftermarket pumps aren't worth a dime. the pump cost on average 234.95 at most parts stores we are a shop here in mulberry and we charge a flat rate of 110 on any intake fuel pump their a pain to change. hope this helps.

Changed fuel pump on 99 gmc sierra and has gone out again in less than 2 months, any suggestions what could be causing it?

Did you change the fuel filter? A partially clogged fuel filter will burn up a brand new pump. Otherwise I would suspect you just got a brand new bad fuel pump. Has happened to me twice, so it is possible. Some parts I pay more for to get the OEM brand. Fuel pumps, water pumps, heater core, etc. Any hard to replace part, I buy from the dealer or from a parts store that sells the OEM brand.

Yes, it does sound like your fuel pump may be going bad.
The first thing I would try is to change the fuel filter. If the fuel filter is plugged, it will cause a low fuel pressure and the engine will not run good.
After you change the fuel filter you will want to do a "fuel pressure" test. You can borrow a fuel pressure gauge or but one ( $40 US ) connect it to the fuel rail test port on the engine and start the truck. Your fuel pressure should be 45 to 55 lbs.
If you have more questions, let me know.
