Question about 1989 Ford Ranger

1 Answer

My 1988 ranger 2.9 v6 idles fine cannot get past 2200 rpm

It seems that some electronic choke or something senses the rpm once over 2200 rpm it automatically slows it down to 1500 rpm ven if you stab the pedal it will wind up and immediatlly try to go to 1500 rpm and sputter and try to die.looking for what causes this . replaced fuel flter, plugs and wires cap rotor, tested fuel pressure 40lbs and checked cataletic converter, and replaced air charging sensor, runns like to choke kicks in at 2000 rpm, throttle body seems to operate correctly. need to find what causes this to happen?????

I have a 1987 Susuki Samurai, 1.3 engine. Cold start is idles at 2000 rpm up to 2200 rpm. Is this normal? Its seems a little fast. How do you adjust the cold fast idle speed? Thanks, Randy

Yeah it sounds kinda high. There is no adj except for the idle screw on the throttle, the computer does the rest, if it has one. If not, then you can adjust it some how. If carbureted, check for 2 little screws in the front, and check the choke, If throttle body, then just the idle screw, the idle should be around 1000. Hope this helps.

Ensure your spark plugs, wires (ignition coil and spark) and your filters (air and fuel) are within 2 years of installation It's erratic at 800 rpm as the engine is cold and they like the 2200 range for 3 minutes before they kick down on their own. Press the pedal twice before inserting your key. The owners manual states depending on the outside temperature, the engine will require more priming. Update if possible.

Check EGR valve this controls idle speed it might have carbon build up hold the valve open. All so check fuel pressure.
