The haynes manual that I have doesnt tell me where the relay is. Can you?

  • jamez202 Jun 26, 2009

If the relay is in the power distribution box by the battery I tested all 3 relays in there with and without juice applied and all 3 check out good

A/c works great. I tested the 3 relays in the power distribution block and they all test fine. With and w/o power.

Ok. so you know the fan is good. switch out the relay for that fan with another same relay and check with the a/c button.

does your a/c work? you'll have to trace to wires back from the fan. there may be a break in the wires or a loose connection. to test the relay you have to aply power the the switch side then check for continuity between the other terminals. if the is a fan relay there you could use a jumper wire in place of the relay and it should come on. the relay will have a map on the side showing which terminals activate the relay and which ones are the switch.

so you're down to tracing back the power wire from the fan and checking for power along the way.

sorry just thought you should also check the ground wire. jump just a ground wire from the battery to the fan or check continuity from fan ground to body.

The cooling fan on my 2001 ford escort SE will not work normally

Check the coolant temperature with the car stopped. At idle with the hood up keep the thermometer in the coolant. Confirm if the coolant is not overheating but the engine is!!

Run the A/C keeping the thermometer in the coolant and allow the fan to kick on.

If with the A/C on the engine doesn't overheat then it confirms that the low speed on the fan motor is not working. Read the description of the Taurus where the low speed is used for normal operation when temperature is required but the high speed is activated when the A/C is on. The circuit is simple.

In your case the low speed has to be activated for the A/C to go into the high speed. The fact that the high speed is working and low speed is not indicates the low speed of the fan is defective.

Other problems such as the thermostat or plugged cooling system(radiator clogged) could be the root problem!

Hope this helps?

Air cool when driving, when idling gets warm and car overheats

Take a look through your front grill and see if there is alot of bugs, dirt, etc. blocking the cooling fins of the condensor and radiator. If so try rinsing them with a water hose, or air pressure. Some cleaners work well also, like " Simple Green " or gunk degreaser. Catch the fluid in a container and dispose of properly.

In a 83 MUSTANG GT the correct answer is BOTH. As a 5.0L and a TURBO CHARGED 4 cyinder were offered.

1983 Mustang GT

    • The new "Turbo GT" with a turbo charged 4 cylinder engine was available beginning late in the model year - 145 HP and featured the same suspension and other features of the V8 Mustang GT.
