Question about 1996 Pontiac Grand Am

96 Grand Am Groaning

My 96 Pontiac Grand Am is making a loud high pitch groaning noise. Sounds like it's coming form the engine. Gets louder as I accelerate or make a turn. What is it?

Sounds like the power steering pump failing. If it seems to be worse when you turn the wheel at a stop, it is time for a new p/s pump.

1996 lincoln town car cartier makes a steady groaning noise seems as if it comes from front of engine. Occurs continuously and then at times, not at all.

If it seems to get louder when you turn the steering wheel then check your power steering fluid level. If determined this is the cause of groaning sound but fluid level is right then you will need to bleed the air or the pump is going bad. Beyond that I need more info for further help.

Does this vehicle have a timing belt or chain and would it make a certain type of noise if it were going bad. My Van is making this groaning type noise that gets louder with acceleration. Any ideas would...

If 3.3 or 3.8 Liter, these use push rods, the 3.0 V6 uses a timing belt. Often times pumps will crate a groan type sound. I'd remove the serpintine belt and start for a moment, if the sound stops it then eliminates troubles within the engine. Or you can pick-up a mechanics listening ear piece (kind of like what your doctor uses to listen to your heart) Carefully place on or near items and listen for noise. PS: if the noise increases when turning the steering wheel that would be your power steering pump. When water pumps fail (or begin to) often times the bearing withing them will begin to growl. If there is any leakage at the water pump this is a sure sign that it is failing.

Please let me know if this had assisted you,

Thanks,
Tom

Loud groaning noise while turning left

Hi

The groaning noise is the power steer pump operating under duress. I would suggest having the front suspension checked for any seized or failing ball joints or control arm problems. Most suspension guys will give the undercarriage a look over for you for free to check for any failing/unsafe parts. The engine belt driving the power steer pump should also be checked in case it needs adjustment.
