The FSM covers the test for this, read the FSM.
bad sender in tank.
bad wires from it to ...
the fuel gauge. (or PCM)

what we do is check the wire to the tank, unplugged.
and check the resistance, with a meter, 10 to 200 ohms is typical
if infinity the sender is bad.
if it reads good, we move to the other end of the wire.
still good? if all that is good then the guage is bad.
many cars have gauge self test. read the FSM for this.

I would think that the fuel sender unit is not working , this is incorporated into the fuel pump , directly into the top of the fuel tank , i would get a mechanic to investigate as there are a few checks that can be made to determine where the fault lies before going ahead and changing the fuel sender

Gas guage reads full all the time

More than likely the fuel tank level sensor (which is located inside of the fuel tank is seized. You will have to have the fuel pump and level sensor replaced.

Fuel gauge reads zero even when full. At times it would creep up to normal.

Hi, your fuel sensor is the culprit. Please get it replaced with new one.

After filling fuel tank, engine light is on and gauge reads empty ,will it be a problem to drive, or should this be replace soon.

{: ) As long as your vehicle can start and run, you can drive it safely. However, your gauge wont tell you hown much fuel for the remaining trip. So better have it fixed before you ran out of fuel on the road.

2006 GMC Envoy XL gas gauge reads empty after filling continues reads empty and the light is on then the check engine light came on what can be the problem how ca i fixe it to save mesome $$$

It is most likely your fuel level sending unit has gone bad. It sits inside your fuel tank to tell the fuel guage how much gas you have in the tank.

The sending unit for the gas gauge is in the fuel tank and part of the fuel pump module, it is not sold seperately. Price is around $350.00, 2 hours labor to install the part.

Gas gauge shows empty after filling gas tank. Eventually the gas gauge will register the proper level.

The gauge circuit is shunted on most cars, this is wierd, but needed to stabilize the readings... Your description sounds like normal function. Drivers would complain if the qauge were to be instant, going around corners, starting, stopping, all move fuel, and the gauge would indicate this, cauing driver alarm...Been this way for ever, although yours sounds like it is on the far side of the scale...if it reads correctly after a while, you could replace everything and you would have the same performance.

Gas gauge problems

Common problem on the 03-06 Envoy instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. Check out this blog post about the problem - Envoy fuel gauge problems
