Question about 2002 Dodge Stratus

1 Answer

I have the exact same problem

We first thought it was the gas we were using from kwik trip and then it continued to happen. after using fuel injector cleaner by LUCAS, we also thought it was fixed. It seems like there are days that nothing happens and then like tonight it died 5 times in a matter of a block. please help because I was told that there is not a fuel filter in my car and I have a 2002. I was told that there is just this thing that sits on the fuel pump that might need to be cleaned. i just need some clarification. thanks

The fuel filter is located in the gas tank with the fuel pump. I doubt the filter is the problem.
They had problems with the iac motor. It controls the idle.

When hot will randomly not start unless gas pedal is pressed all the way down. on a 2001 honda crv. replaced fule pump, fuel relay, fuel filter, dist. cap, rotor, coil, plugs, wires, and ignition control

If you hold the pedal to the floor it puts the fuel system into Clear Flood Mode. This prevents the injectors from firing and lets the already present fuel burn out. Now if this has to be done on every short trip you probably have a leaking injector.

Does the vehicle seem to crank slowly or stop and then crank when this happens?

2002 Buick lesabre random cylinder misfires

You have clogged or cracked fuel injector. I've seen this on many GM vehicles while shopping at the junk yards. Super common problem. It happens on almost every car with the older fuel injectors that are made out of hard plastics to insulate the electrical connector that opens the injector. The gas has a pressure built up in the line and the rails that supply the gas to the injectors. That plastic gets hot and eventually gets dried out and will crack and let gas leak out, thus you have the gas fumes smelling up you car also. The gas will leak onto the intake and vaporize since the manifold is hot, it evaporates instantly you won't even see the gas leaking. Can be tested by checking the pressure of the gas at the rail, should hold pressure for a few minutes after shut down, My Mustang had this problem, I was at the junk yard looking for replacements and found there were very few that were not already cracked.

At the same time I was shopping for a GM alternator, that's when I started looking at GM fuel injectors to see if they were cracked also. I didn't have to look very hard since 80% of them were covered in silicone sealant to try to stop the leaks. This may work but only if the fuel injectors are removed and completely spotless with no residue of any type along the cracks, then a large amount of silicone should be placed completely encasing the plastic piece with 1/8" thick layer of silicone then letting if dry for a minimum of 48 hours before testing it in your car. This may or may not work, fuel injectors will have to be bought new, used will all be cracked, they're not cheap and usually sold as sets. you would need 6 and the cost could be $50 -$300+ each depending on what you need/want. High grade Silicone sealant is $5-$10 and may be found in colors that may match the plastic part.

I could be wrong but as soon as I read the symptoms I thought of this then I read all that was done and couldn't believe what I was reading. I would have started with fuel injectors right off the bat, very common. I would suggest buying 6 new or rebuilding all of yours and sealing them at a very minimum, you will end up with more problems if you continue to drive it with low gas being sent into that or those cylinder(s). May be low fuel on every cylinder but not enough to throw a code yet. Injectors are not hard to replace but can be a pain on some models getting the bolts out of the rail mounts due to design.

I have a 1998 toyota sienna van.about 4 months ago it was spitting and sputtering a little then the next day the check engine light came on and started doing it again,it got a little worse but only would...

low on fuel has two serious consequences
the fuel pump runs dry and destroys the plastic gears and
all the rubbish in the tank is sucked into the pump and filters and to the injectors
at this point , use a quality injector cleaner and see what happens as a misfiring injector is more likely blockage in the injector

1999 express 1500 4.3 motor has a lot of gas in the motor oil how does this happen

a leaking fuel injector will continue to flow fuel after the engine is shut off. This fuel flows down the cylinder wall, past the rings and into the oil pan. A leaking fuel pressure regulator will do the same.

My Trailblazer started idling and running rough intermittently. We thought bad gas. We were on a trip and used a gas teatment to get rid of water. Did not help. Delaer thought the same but now says...

I'm guessing you have the 6 cylinder engine and not the 8? I don't buy what the dealer told you. If you're really worried about a little water in the fuel system, run a bottle of Seafoam through the brake booster/ gas tank, that will solve any water in the system. Change your fuel filter after you do this, it will be dirty now, due to the Seafoam cleaning your gas tank. Wondering what would need to be "sealed" if there were a little water in a cylinder due to bad gas??? There are 6 coils on this engine, one per cylinder. If the coil goes bad, you would get a check engine light for a cylinder misfire and it would be consistantly running rough. Since it your problem happens intermittently, I'd check the wires going to the coil for any faults. I'd also check for a possible 02 sensor starting to go bad.

1 thought, does this only happen when ever you happen to have the defroster on, or the A/C? If so, I can help you solve your problem easily.

Took a road trip to houston and since i've been back the car is sputtering and running sluggish. the check engine light just came on this morning on my way into work. any thoughts? oil was just changed...

Try running some fuel injector or fuel system cleaner through the engine and be certain your gas cap is on tight. While you might have encountered some bad gas on your trip it is likely coincidental , due to running at highway speeds for an extended time. Your check engine light is linked to the fuel air mixture ECU which regulates fuel mixture. If an O2 sensor on the engine or exhaust area is clogged or failing due to leaky catalytic converter, the ECU will attempt to adjust your fuel mixture which will affect your idle.
Have a tech run a readout on the vehicle after cleaning the fuel system. The readout will indicate what caused the check engine light to come on.

My husband said his 2000 Chevy S10 would sputter and stall continuously. Just happened yesterday. Took it to Pep Boys. They diagnosed it as a bad fuel injector. He has a 4 cyclinder manual transmission....

I had the same problem with my 1992 S10 Pick Up. Found the problem to be with the fuel pump. Replaced the fuel pump and it ran like a charm.
The fuel pump is located in the gas tank.

1990 nissan 300zx loss of power when accelerating hard at around 4000 rpm after a few seconds power returns

I had this exact same problem and it was the Crank Angle Sensor and Crank Angle Sensor connector shorting out at High RPM.

THe solution was to put some electro-conductive grease on the connector the the sensor.

You'll find the sensor on the driver side near in front of the engine.
