Question about 2004 Dodge Ram 2500

I am having trouble with passenger side front end tire seems to be wearing on outside. Took to mechanic(s) and 2 say it is ball joints and one says it is the wheel bearing hub and the drag link how do I know which it is?

Take to someone who knows what they are doing depending if you have your car services on a regular bases the milage of the car how ruff the roads are you drive the potholes you miss all have somthing to do to cause problems with a front end.......now if you are a back yard mechinac you can check yourself or if you have a sears or ntb or firestone, midas ask them if they can check the front end out so you know if you should get front work done before you buy tires they will check the whole front end out and tell you what is what if the mechanic says its going bad or its ok for now then replace it you'll save gas your life or someone else's

A loose front end is no joke. Ignoring the problem can cause premature / uneven tire wear and other costly repairs or accident due to catastrophic failure when least expected.

Typically, front end pivoting points used for steering - called "ball joints" - wear out providing similar sensations as you describe. This is not really a DIY type of repair - and should be brought to a trusted mechanic for a proper diagnosis and repair.

My front passenger wheel makes a rubbing noise at 50 mph


You just need to have a mechanic or someone look at the front end. Has it been happening long enough to cause any odd tire wear on the tire? If the front end alignment is off, you could certainly get a lot more road noise, but even a badly worn tire would cause some noise.
If the tire is actually rubbing against something, and you hear it at 50 mph, that seems to indicate badly worn suspension parts- like ball joints or struts...so you should consider a good front end alignment shop and tell them the condition. They can check the tires and the front end as well. A reputable shop would check all that anyway, to make sure that the alignment job will actually keep the front end true.

Why are the tires wearing badly on the inside on left steering tire. Now I'm wondering if I have solved the tire wear or not?


You did not mention if you had an alignment done after parts replacd, if definitely do so. If you have .ok were the ball joints bad. Tie rods bad.loose bearings?

Front tyres bolding on the outside


Cars and trucks are supposed to have their tires rotated every 5,000 miles.
Doing this will only slow the wear on the outside of the tire. Whenever you turn a corner, the weight of the car and the forces of friction will cause the outside of the tries to wear off, the rubber is getting "scrubbed off".
Not rotating the tires will cause the outside of the front tires to wear out before any other part of any tire.
Then, there is the matter of worn "front end" parts.
The parts that wear most often and quickest are the tire rod ends. Next are the ball joints, and last are the shocks/struts.
When a car has about 100,000 miles, these parts begin to show their wear by causing bad tire wear.
Someone needs to check your car most carefully to see if any of these parts are causing your problem.
After all the worn parts are replaced, the last thing is the "front end alignment".
As you drive mile after mile, you occasionally hit bumps.
Although these bumps do not show up quickly, the bumps will, over time, cause the tires to become a little crooked, and about once every 3-6 years, the front end needs to be aligned, or have the tires straightened.

I vote yes. Any worn component of the front end be it ball joints,tie rods,wheel bearings,even tire balance will adversely affect tire wear.

Substantial front end shimmy at 50-55 MPH. All new tires, front end parts look good, ball joints fine.


How did the old tires wear. Looking at them will be the indicator of an issue. If they wear on the inside you have a lower ball joint issue. If wearing on the outside the upper ball joints are bad, Also you may of got a defective tire or the balance weight fell off. Also tha axle bearing nut may be loose. Also the linkage going across could have bad ball joints. Best to go get it inspected. Its worth it rather than trying to figure it out yourself

Car started to shake while driving


Jack front end. Use both hands to check driver and passenger side tires for slight wobble. If wobbles, you have a bad ball joint. Otherwise inspect tie-rod end for wear.

The front passenger tire is wearing vairy hard on the outside tread. Also when I'm turning the vehicle I can hear some grinding and squeaking coming from that side of the axel.


Sounds like tracking does the other tyre have the same problem?

It could also be the bush or trackrod end it is possible that your rubber boot has split and has no more grease inside and you can hear metal against metal.

Its time to take it in tracking first then check the CV joint and all the rubbers for wear if so they need replacing

2002 325i Knocking noise front suspension


This noise is likely caused by swaybar end-link joints. Newer cars use solid rods with ball and socket joints, to connect the ends of the swaybar to the frame. These ball and socket joints at the end of these rods, create an amazingly noticeable and annoying noise in the car when you go over the slightest bump. There is no way to test these things unless you disconnect one end and check to see how tight the ball is in the socket just by wigging the with your hands. If they move around at all without pressure, they are no good. Go to ebay and search "bmw endlinks " for a picture.

I have a 2002 monte carlo and it shakes reallt bad at 50 mph and turning curves at 25 mph speeds and up...also going down hills and pushing the brakes..i just had new rotors and brakes put on the front...


I'm going to bet that you didn't do anything about checking the following:
  1. Tie Rods and ball joints.
  2. Shocks/struts...front and rear
  3. Wheel balance
  4. Condition of the tires.
If you don't know how to check the first two, do the following: jack front wheel up and insert a stand. Then take the bottom of the tire and pull up quickly and hard...does it 'click'? Now, do the same from front to back. Up and down wear is ball joints...side to side is tie rods. Get a mechanic to help you. Many chains will inspect for a modest fee.

If a tire is worn because of worn front end parts...the wheel can't hold a proper position in relation to the steering wheel...it wears the tires. They go out of balance and will shake at 25 mph. Check for rounded sidewalls and uneven wear. Replace the tires after getting new front end parts installed and aligned. Check your shocks/struts for excess wear or leaking. They contribute poor ride, to wear and sloppy handling
