Question about 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

2 Answers

2003 PT Cruiser w/manual transmission won't go in reverse.

I lent my sister my car while on vacation. When I returned she told me that my car will not go into reverse. It drives well in 1-5, but I cannot get the shifter into reverse. It's like something is blocking the shifter from getting into reverse.
I am afraid that I will get screwed when I take it to a shop/dealer.. Any help would be great so I can do the work myself.

Try to add LUCAS OIL transmission anti-slipp additive. It helps smooth the shifting. If this helps you need to replace transmission fluid with the filter and add fresh fluid with Lucas oil additive ..

Grinding sound

Is the knocking sound when the car is moving or sitting still as well? Does the grinding sound happen just as you put the car into reverse or does it keep grinding?
These transmissions are very problematic, especially if they are not properly maintained. The most likely candidates are a cracked flywheel or a broken drum inside the transmission. Either way, it sounds like the transmission will have to be removed to pinpoint the problem.

We have a Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.0 ltr 90K on the clock, always serviced. Now will not go into reverse gear. All other gears and clutch operation is fine....any suggestions

the shift cables can be adjusted but you will have to remove the cover around the console. Also look at the top of the transmission to see if any of the cables came off. Oreilly sells a chilton manual for pt cruisers on page 7a-2 it shows the cables and how to adjust them.

How to add transmission fluid to a 2003 model manual transmission.

there is usually a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission and a fill plug on the side. your manual will usually show you where they are. drain and then fill untill no more will go in the side hole. also check your manual for what fluid you should put in some manual transmissions take regular oil i think.

My 2004 chysler pt crusier wont backup it make a noise going forward

I'm not sure if you have a manual or automatic transmission. Sometimes the manual transmissions have trouble going into reverse and you need to hold it in while letting out the clutch for it to engage positively. If you have an automatic transmission, check the transmission fluid level and see if it smells burnt or abnormal.

Post a comment with a few more details and we will get back to you.

Thanks,

Tim

Tie rod ends replaced/ clutch out

The tie rod ends should not have anything to do with the transmission. Was the car jacked up on the shift linkage?
