It sounds like you may have a sun gear failure. Before we go there check the fuse for the transmission, make sure it's still good. Good luck and keep me posted.

    There are two fuse to the ECM in the fuse box at the end of the dash on the friver's side, check the fuse  to make sure there good. Also check the gear selector shift linkage at the transmission, There know to crack and brake. Your going to need help doing that and do it with the engine not running, Don't want to know you ended up at the hospital. With the ignition key to the run position and engine not running, go through all the gear selection P-R-N-D and make sure the linkage is moving correctly at the transmission and check the level selection sensor wire harness there too. Keep me posted, be glad to help you save money. Here is aTSB concerning your 2004 avalanche, just scroll down to the transmission and hope there is something there that can lead us to a quick answer. http://www.carcomplaints.com/Chevrolet/A...

My 2004 Avalanche done the same thing one morning going to work. it just stopped going. I did not have any drives or reverse. I replaced the tork converter it was very bad and they said all the metal stopped up the filter and thats what shut the transmission down. after the tork converter was replaced it drove about 30-40 miles and did it again. we had to have the transmission rebuilt. so if your tork converter is bad then rebuild the transmission it will save you money. we are out 2 tork converter and one rebuilt transmission. first bill was almost 700.00 and the last one was 1100.00

1999 Dodge Grand Caravan Transmission will not go into reverse

It sounds as if your pump pressure is quite low. there is enough pressure for the trans to work with absolutely no load on it, but not enough for it to work properly.

M5r2 ford thunderbird sc trans bad in reverse!

Rebuild or replace your transmission. Don't fall for any "quick fix" stories. I've been at this professionally for over 20 years and I'm here to tell you, there is no magic cure for reverse being gone. By the way, T'Bird SC is quite the car, worked on quite a few (and driven) - nice!

So driving down the road my transmission just quit working completely, no forward, no reverse, it was just like it was in neutral, fluid level fine and bright red, and my turn signals and 4 ways also...

I would solve the electrical issues, before I would let anyone
pull the transaxle out

A trans shop is not the place to be for that

I used to own one

They will rebuild the trans & you will still have
the other problems & they won't have anyone
that can help

Was pushing snow and heard aloud ping while in reverse and it quit pulling.all forward gears still work. sounded like a u-joint. believe me i no that sound.i drive it like i stoled it. lol.but thats what...

not sure if this is an automatic or manual transmission 1st (automatic)if all forward gears are still working what it sounds like is that the reverse drum in the transmission has come apart. which will eventually cause the forward gears to start to go if thats the case, the rapir for the reverse drum is internal the transmission will need to be rebuilt. you can just put a reverse drum, but my opinion is there will be more damage and while its out might as well rebuild the entire transmission. you didnt mention if it was 4 wd or not and only rarely have i seen a transfer case cause the same issue, once most recently in a f150 with a manual transmission i was working on the chain stretched so bad it lost reverse but had all forward gears. 2nd (manual) could have lost the reverse synchronizer whic again the trans will need to be repaired either with just a syncro or complete rebuild. hope this helps

NO TRANSMISSON

Hello;
With no forward and no reverse, first check the fluid level. Start the vehicle and leave in park, with thee engine running, pull the transmission dipstick and make sure you have full fluid. If you do, then you have an internal problem in the torque convertor or transmission itself.
Did it make any noise when it quit on you? Hope this helps, rate me highly.
Thanks;

My car shuts off in reverse

dear friend-i think what your car needs is conditioner to soften the seals and valve body,if this does not work you wil have to remove the valve body and clean.
