So you have swapped motors? Did you also swap the ECU's? If not then the fuel maps will be different and cause these kind of problems. Make sure the ECU matches the motor and transmission type, MT or AT.

Under the dash on top of the clutch pedal there will be a retainer clip holding the cable, remove that then a similar clip on the gearbox, you will have to undo a cable holder bracket to remove the cable, the cable will also have a gromet in the firewall that needs to be positioned correctly on assembly, adjust the cable accordingly with the adjuster on the gearbox once installed, good luck drive safely

1993–99 Cabrio, Golf, and Jetta

1. Remove the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
4. Remove the rear seat and the access cover.
5. Disconnect the wiring and hoses.
6. Remove the fuel lines from the pump.
7. On 1993–99 Golf, Jetta and Cabrio vehicles, unscrew the fuel pump retaining ring.
8. On all other models, remove the mounting bolts and the fuel pump.
9. Carefully lift out the pump and gauge sending unit assembly.
10. Empty the fuel pump into an approved container.

To install:

1. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to use new sealing rings and/or gaskets.
