Question about 2005 Nissan Altima

I AM HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING MY SHIFTER OUT OF PARK, I HAVE TO STEP ON THE BRAKE SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT WILL GO INTO GEAR? the car has only 35k miles on it?

The brake light switch may need adjusting
check that brake lights come on at about 25mm pedal movement this then activates shift lock mechanism solenoid so you can then move out of park and ignition has to be on at same time

I have a 2088 Suzuki SX4 automatic on the floor. I have been having intermittent problems of getting it to go into gear out of park. I can move the shifter side to side but it will not go out of park. ...


the time machine, wow that is a jump, i bet even scares Luke Skyjacker.
this is a feature, called PARK LOCK out.
on most Suz, there a bypass switch, the operators guide (lost that)
sure hard to get asking for 2088 op guide at suzuki < LOL!
no thoughts, just facts, its busted. the FSM covers how to fix it.
the system works like this,
key lock. and then unlocked, it passes through the brake switch'
then to the park lockout solenoid , under shifter. and unlocks the shifter
that is so soccer mom dont drive over kids,
you know, she steps on gas, instead of brake?
the book is only 4 bucks. on line.

Subaru 1995 wont go into gear


There is a small solenoid under the shifter cover that holds the shifter in park until you step on the brake that's not working all the time. It could be the brake light switch on the brake pedal is bad. Check to see if your brake lights are working correctly when you step on the brakes. If they are working right then that's not the problem and you will have to take the cover off the shifter and check to see if the solenoid is working when you step on the brake. I have seen bad or corroded connections at the plug due to liquids being spilled on the shifter. Sometimes the mechanical linkage is bent up from something getting in there through the slot that the shifter moves in. There is a little hole in the shifter cover that says manual release or some such thing. Usually it has a little plug that you have to pry off to remove with a small screwdriver. Then you put the little screwdriver in the hole and push down. That will release the lock so you can shift it. (It's used to shift the car when the battery is dead or missing)

Car won't shift from neutral to park


replacing transmission?????nonsence!!! i can tell this is an automatic trans setup, not standard. lets start here. put car in PARK and turn key on so the dash comes on. do not start car. step on the brake pedal several times slowly and listen for audible sound coming from the shifter area. you should hear clicking sound everytime yo uhit the brake. that is the shift lock solenoid releasing the mechanism indside of the shifter assembly so you can get the car out of park and into gear. you may have an issue with the shifter assembly it self. if no clicking sound is heard, it will need to be diagnosed fruther. the solenoid can not be purhcsed separatelly. shifter assembly only. start with the listening procedure and let me know.

if you have to step on the brake to shift from park, it could be that interlock switch.

Can't turn ignition into off position


um instead of having to take the whole panel off thee is a lil hole under the steering wheel if you unplug it u can use a pen to bypas that switch. but it actually has to do with you brakes and the park. if you are parking on a hill alot... it will mess it up... but you have to press the brake and move the shifter at the same time and you will hear it clik(slightly so listen) . my car does it. if i thro it into park before i come to a complete stop or if im useing the parking brake alot

The shifter is locked and engine turns on but can not shift from park


1st, have someone step on brake pedal while you check to see if your brake lights are working, if yes proceed to step 2, if not check your brake light fuse(Left side of dash fuse#20- 10amp)IF fuse is good replace brake light switch on brake pedal. 2nd Step (brake lights ok) Turn key on engine off, press and release brake pedal several times slowly, listen for a click and and pulse on shifter handle. IF yes you have a shifter malfunction replace shifter assembly. IF no, inspect shift interlock solenoid and or relace solenoid and cable. You should see a small access cover about the size of a peanut around base faceplate of shifter assembly use small screwdriver and remove cover, use screw driver to press button underneath plate and release shifter into reverse and drive gears(this is manual overide) if you need to move vehicle in the meantime.

Gear shifter will not come out of park with brake depressed


Look and make sure the switch behind the brake pedel is getting depressed when you step on the brake and that its not broken.

there is a silinoid switch thats not disengaging when you hit the brakes have it replaced

Gear Shifter


The park is locked out until the brake is pushed, make sure the brake lights work, if not test the brake light switch with a test light, if all that is ok then the solenoid that disengages the park lock out is defective.
