THE COMPUTER DOESN'T TELL U ANYTHING OF THE SORT, IT U READ THE PINPOINT TESTS U WILL FIND THAT THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT NEED TO BE CHECKED BEFORE THE SENSOR IS REPLACED, ENGINE MECNANICAL PROBLEMS, WIRING HARNESS ISSUES, LEAKING FUEL INJECTORS AND SO ON..

There are 2 oxygen sensors on my ford escort 2001. one before and one after the catalytic converter. how can I tell if one or both are bad. I had it diagnosed when the check engine light came on.

Replace both, this will save you having to do it later and all the costs associated with putting it on a lift a second time. The sensors do not cost much, the labor on the other hand, well that all depends on who you go to. If you have the ability to get under the car, do it yourself it is an easy fix. Buy the sensor from Autozone or O'Reilly and they will allow you to use the digital testor to reset the check engine light.

1995 ford explorer check engine light is on

Get a shop to read the codes from the engine computer. You can do it yourself by grounding a pin on the diagnostic connector and counting the flashes from the check engine light. The code will tell you which part is causing the problem- usually an oxygen sensor or an EGR problem on these engines.

2005 Ford F150 Engine check light blinking on & off?

Any symptoms,Dawn, such as performance troubles? Might be an oxygen sensor going bad, catalytic converter starting to plug, or EGR valve getting dirty and sticking.
If you can,get the OBD II codes run. They should help pinpoint the problem. My guess is it's an oxygen sensor, but that's only a guess. don-ohio (:^)

Just had bank 1 and bank 2 of the catalyist system a total of 4 catalitic converters on a 97 ford explorer put back in but still runs rough .checked on the plugs and wires and nothing there . went to look...

I can probably tell you EXACTLY what the problem is - the catalytic converters did not cause your "running bad" problem. The running bad problem burned up your catalytic converters.
Now I KNOW your check engine light has GOT to be SCREAMING at you! If you scan your onboard computer system, I think you will most likely find codes P0171 and P0174 (Oxygen sensor lean Bank 1 and bank 2 respectively) Your catalyst is glowing red hot because there is WAY too much fuel and oxygen in the exhaust!!!

The oxygen is in there because you have a severe vacuum leak. Assuming that you have either a 4.6L or 5.4L engine (It would be helpful to mention these things when you ask for help with your truck) the MOST LIKELY cause is a hole in the rubber boot that connects the PCV tube to the back of the throttle body/plenum area. THIS would be the INITIAL CAUSE of the problem and had it been fixed when the check engine light first came on, you could have saved the cost of the catalytic converters.

The extra fuel is getting in there because the computer is dumping fuel into the engine because the oxygen sensors are telling it that there is too much oxygen in the exhaust and the engine is running lean. The oxygen sensors are only reporting what they see, so it is NOT their fault! There IS too much oxygen in the exhaust!

So, with all that said, fix the vacuum leak, clear the codes, and your truck should be back to normal.

97 CV - Chk Eng light on - something about oxygen sensor??? BUT - in cold weather - has little to no PWOWER in accellorating - UNLESS I allow the engine to "warm-up" for a while?>???

if the oxygen sensor is bad it will either not send or send the wrong signal to the ecu making the engine think it is running rich on fuel so the ecu cuts back the fuel supply

Hi its Bill here again, about the Ford '99 Longreach ute 4.0 ltr Where exactly is the cold start temp sensor? is it the two pronged plug in thing about 2" under the thermostat?..and how would that...

The cold start temp sensor is same as ambient air sensor, tells the computer to give the engine a certain amount of fuel to start since there isn't a choke per se. There are two temp sensors, the air temp sensor and the water temperature sending unit usually near the thermostat. The cold start doesn't affect fuel economy unless it's telling the computer the engine is cold. The computer reads several sensors to meter the fuel, map sensor which works off intake manifold pressure (check rubber hose for cracks that connects it), throttle position sensor which is the main fuel control (test it with an ohm meter) and oxygen sensors. The main culprits for bad fuel mileage are usually a partially stopped up catalytic convertor and bad oxygen sensor(s). You can sometimes remove a O2 sensor and spray it with carb cleaner , lightly brush the carbon off with a wire brush to get it working again. This fuel with alcohol is rough on all vehicles. Hope some of this helps.

Check engine light on, replaced oxygen sensor before catalyst,

  • Water or corrosion in the connector
  • Loose terminals in the connector
  • Wiring burnt on exhaust components
  • Open or short in the wiring due to rubbing on engine components
  • Holes in exhaust allowing unmetered oxygen into exhaust system
  • Unmetered vacuum leak at the engine
  • Bad o2 sensor
  • Bad PCM

Engine light came on,had it checked out,go engine codes 1131 and 1132,what do they mean on my 1999 ford escort?

Google code 1131 ford and read the story about Ford Mass air Flow sensors. It is posted by autotechrepair.suite101.
The code points to bad switching (oxygen sensor) but that is not really the problem. It is the MAF sensor

Oxygen sensor for 1999 ford explorer

97 ane 97 have 4. I will assume that yours does too.

Go under Explorer.
Trace exhaust maniford from engine to catalytic converter.... in that path, you will find an O2 sensor (looks like a spark plug right in the exhaust pipe).

Same item on other side.

Now, sad part. You MAY find 2 more O2 sensors just after the converter!!

Autozone can usually do a free diagnostic on your vehicle and tell you which 1 or 2 sensors are bad.

Check engine light is on,codes 171,174,system lean, codes came back as 2 oxygen sensor's before cat/conv,do they need to be replaced or could it be something else causing it, any help would be great!!!

O2 SENSORS ARE BAD MOST LIKELY I WOULD CHANGE THEM DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FOR 5 MIN. ( IF YOU DONT HAVE A SCANNER) THIS WILL RESET YOUR COMPUTER AND SHOULD MAKE THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT GO OUT.
