$1000 is appropriate at a chain garage or dealership as long as it carrys a warrenty. with the economy the way it is if you want to save money you can hire a mechanic to do it as sidework but you are taking your chances on how quick he will do it and you have to make sure he knows what he is doing. if you need the car done quickly and are not a good judge of character shell out the $1000. If you can spot someone bull"s"ing and have a little more time offer a mechanic $500. Sometimes you can drive up to a shop and bypass the office and ask the mechanic directly if he does sidework. Most will love the oppertunity because they are paid nowhere near what you pay for the service.

What can cause the timing chain to jump time on an 05 ford explorer

The 4.0l sohc v6 is notorious for breaking the plastic chain guides. You will need t remove the engine to repair it properly and there are lots of special tools required to properly time the vehicle. There are actually 4 timing chains and I suggest replacing all 4 and their respective guides and tensioners.

Timing chain noise in my BMW

replace the timing chain tensioner, about 60 euro and easy to do yourself,
however, the timing chain guides may be broke or damaged which is a big operation. They are made from plastic and can become brittle and break.
The kit for them are relatively cheap off eBay (120 euro) but they are very labour intensive, no change out of 500 euro id say,
lets hope its the tensioner

I have a bmw 318 ci coupe that idles up and down when warm, any ideas, cheers

1) Check and make sure that the rubber intake pipe and vacuum hose are not leaking.

2) If the symptom persists, check and thoroughly clean the throttle with a good solvent.

3) Then, check if the fuel return valve is NOT leaking. (remove the hose and smell for gas odor) .If you smell gas, replace the valve in no time.

4) If you follow steps 1 to 3 and the problem lingers, try replacing the TPS. (Throttle Sensor)

Good Luck!!

Do grade me if it helps.

Problem whit my timer chain

I am going to have to assume this is a 4 cylinder with a timing chain. Probably a 22R or 22RE engine. This is not a small job. The cause of a loose chain is attributed to 1. timing chain stretch 2. the plastic guides break or wear away 3.the tensioner is no longer tensioning. The fix is to replace timing chain, chain guides, and the tensioner, while you have the vehicle apart it is GP ( general practice) to replace the front crankshaft seal as well as valve cover gasket and half moons, be sure to check your water pump as well for leakage and or bad bearings. Do a tune-up, adjust the valves and youll be good as new! Buy a Haynes or Chilton book for teardown instructions. Hope this helps ya!
