Fuel gauge not working

I have an 85 chevy 4wd when i put gas in yesterday and the gauge quit working. It has dual tanks. the grounds on the frame are good and the switch works. When I flip the switch the gauge reads fuller and fuller. One tank is 3/4 full and the other is about 1/8 full The sending units are 2 years old that is when the truck was redone. I have worked on alot of these trucks before. What am i missing.

Thanks Rich

How do I repair or replace a defective gas gauge?

It is in the instrument cluster, which has to be removed to replace the gauge. It cannot be repaired. Did you first check the 10 amp METER fuse in the fuse panel?

Now let me say, that when the gauge quits, it is more often a fault in the sending unit in the gas tank, and not the gauge. Here is how to find out if your gauge is good: Find the fuel tank electrical connector, and pull it apart. You will need a small jumper wire. Find the blue wire in the body side of the connector (not the fuel tank side). Put the jumper wire into the blue wire terminal, turn the ignition key to on not start, and ground the jumper wire to a metal frame piece. Someone needs to watch the fuel gauge needle while the wire is grounded. If the gauge in the dash is good, the needle will move. It will probably go to either full or empty, but if the needle moves, the gauge is good and the fault is in the sending unit in the tank. Don't give up testing until you are sure the jumper wire is being grounded good to the frame. Just touch the wire to frame and watch the needle movement, once sure, stop so you don't blow the fuse. If the needle doesn't move, first check the 10 amp meter fuse. If fuse is good, it must be the gauge.

How do i know i have a bad float in dual tanks?

Of readings are inconsistent with known fuel levels, Ground (or connect to a tester light) the sender unit wire and watch if the gauge rises.

On my 93 chevy s10 4x4 blazer, my instrument panel worked before new motor was put in, after having the new engine put in, my fuel gauge, oil pressure, voltmeter, rpm, and my temp gauge all quit worki

Look for a missing ground strap from the engine to the body or frame. Remember the engine sits on rubber mounts so that ground strap is essential.

2007 F350 4x4 regular cab V10 gas guage quit working I had the sending unit and fuel pump changed the fuel guage went to 1/4 and sat there. Any tips? Fuel guage wont work.

I'm assuming this has dual tanks, do you know if it is not working on both tanks ?
Most people would check the circuit for the gauge at the tank. The sending unit grounds the gauge on the dash.

Hi my problem with my s-10 pick-up 2000 4wd 4.3l vortec manual my fuel gauge got to empty too full when running and yesterday i go to work and after my day a work i can start my truck!!the motor crank but...

Well not hearing the fuel pump and the fuel gauge doing its thing it may not be the pump itself and it may be the connection or the ground for it.
GM had changed the style of the fuel pump module connectors from a square four wire to a flat four wire for some reason. Maybe an updated connection because the old style square had faults. You may be able to fiddle with the connection from through the wheel well between the bed and frame. There should also be a ground on the frame near the tank. And also check a round connector that may be located along the harness near the tank.

The gas gauge is still not working even when the fuel pump is replaced n gas unit as well. I spend a 1,000 dollars n it is not fixed. can the fuse cause the gas gauge not to work.

Hi have you had the fuel sender unit replaced this is located in the top of the tank, the most faults with fuel gauge not working is the fuel sender unit its usually the float attatched to it that leaks and then always read an empty tank, the fuel pump does not affect the gauge even without a fuel pump fitted the gauge will still work, now if you have replaced the sender unit then the chances are the problem is with the fuel gauge itself, have you tried banging on the dashboard where the fuel gauge is sometimes it sticks and giving the display a bang where the fuel gauge is frees it up so give it a bang and see if it moves, failing that the problem is going to be fuel sender or less likely faulty fuel gauge.

1992 f 159 dual tanks fuel guage not working

You will need to remove the wire for the sending unit on the tank and ground it to the frame with your selector switched to the tank you are working on and the key on. If gauge comes up to full then the sending unit is bad and gauge is good. Repeat process on other tank. The fuel tank switching valve on the frame also switches the wiring signal from either tank for the gauge. If no change with first test you will want to check the valve.
