Question about 1995 Chevrolet Lumina

1 Answer

Car won't start just clicks

I have seen similar posts on this problem. But when I go to turn my car on it just clicks, dead silence. I had taken this in approx. a year and a half to two years ago, they eventually determined it was the security system. So they replaced the security system the corresponds with the chip in the key. This was fairly costly and within 6 months it was doing the same thing. It has been happening sporadically ever since. It always starts eventually, at least for now. Could it be the security system again, or is it possible that was not the problem in the first place?

so does that mean the electrical system they replaced probably wasn't the problem?

This problem is caused by the main starter electrical contacts inside the starter solenoid being burned and erroded, replace the starter solenoid and it will correct the problem.

yes it does, if it would have been the security system you would have not heard anything, the click is the give away on this solenoid issue.

Open hood and look at left side of engine compartment. Find the braid jumper going from engine block to fender. Grab hold and wiggle. It may be loose from corrosion at the fender end. If possible tighten. If not replace with a new heavy jumper from block to body of car. This a major design flaw since battery charging current and starter current is forced through this skimpy wire and connection. I replaced battery and alternator twice before discovering this defect.

Engine wont turn when when I turn on ignition all the gages work

it could be a weak connection to your battery. try cleaning out the posts on your battery and the post connectors.

Your starter motor is either not getting power or in need of replacement. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with your car.

Also check your battery connections for no corrosion there as well as by the starter motor. Low voltage circuits in a car are extremely vulnerable to poor contact issues.

Sorry bud you need a starter, relay contacts in the starter are very dirty or just plain worn out.

Car won't turn over randomly

When it will not crank, a mechanic would check for voltage at the starter, the clutch safety switch, and the key switch.

PLEASE HELP, MY CAR IS MY JOB!!!my 85 bonneville wont start. when i turn the key it just clicks. i checked the battery, and my car is getting power. but it wont turn over?

I'm gonna give you 2 possible solutions, since you didn't specify if it clicks once when turned to start,or clicks repeatedly. If it clicks once, and the dash lights don't flicker,it's probably an issue with the starter(dead winding or solenoid contacts worn). If it clicks repeatedly when turned to start, then the battery is low on charge or has a bad cell.If you're messing with the battery cables, make sure you clean any green corrosion off of the cxables at the battery(because of GM's side post design, the corrosion is hidden and often forgotten).I have actually have seen corrosion between the battery and cable mimic a dead battery. If you do find a lot of corrosion, clean it up and try charging the battery on 10 amps charge overnight.

Engine won't turn over, no clicking or anything. Total silence. Battery terminals have been cleaned, battery is newer...... when ignition is turned on, air conditioning runs, lights do not dim, radio works...

try giggling the shifter or starting it in neutral--possible interlock switch failing. Also could be your anti-theft system--try using other factory key

that sounds like its the ignitionswitch is going bad on the car or its the ignition its self. it could also be a loose wire going to your starter.
