Dave, you will need to find out which GM motor you have in 1980 GM probably had 40 car models considering Chev, Olds, Pont, Catalac, Buick ... Then you will have to find the info on that engine.. I suggest you try your local library, for an old book. or possibly advertise on Craigs list for literature or factory manual once you find out which engine you have.

How do i check my transmission fluid on my 1980

Normally there will be a plug, about 5/8" square on side of transmission about halfway up or higher that comes out and you simply use your finger in the hole. slide finger in to first joint, and bend it down. If it is touching fluid, your good, if not add until it does. Check manual if you still have it, or ask at parts store,but most likely 80/90 gear oil.

You can go to autozone.com and register for full free online repair manual. It will have wiring diagrams, other diagrams, diagnostics, and much much more. You can find your wiring diagram here. I feel it will help you best.

Most likely the dimmer switch is bad. It's a very common Jeep problem. If that's not it I would check the grounds to make sure they are good.
