Question about 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

1 Answer

I have had to fill my coolant, but don't see where it is leaking from. There is no obvious leaks under the car. The add coolant light was blinking when I drove down the road and then the car started overheating. I immediately pulled over and turned off the car. Could this have damaged my engine. I added coolant and now the light has come on again. What could be the source of the leak?

Most likely is the head gasket

Fill the system and start it up ,with the cap removed look at the header tank where you fill the radiatior is there bubbles coming up from the bottom put the cap on, then go around the back of the car and put your hand in front of the muffler outlet.

If you get a wet hand there is a leak on the head going into the pistons and getting expelled out of the muffler

Dip the oil , if it a bit like mayonaisse then the water is leaking into the sump

You can try products like Radweld and Ce-lit which can stop leaks on a temporary basis

If not it is a head off job

My radiator light keeps coming on.. I have change water heater, thermal pump, all hoses, and radiator.. but keep have to fill up coolant

If there is no obvious external coolant leak, the coolant is being burned in the engine and going out the exhaust pipe.
You could have a leaking head gasket.

Coolant is a rusty milkshake consistency

if you do not see any obvious leaks under the car and you are still adding water to it, you might have a cracked head gasket which is causing coolant to go into cylinders. If this is the case, this can cause more problems.

Keen on having to top up the coolant in my car

You most likely have a slow leak.
When your engine is cold, top up the coolant, with the bonnet up start your engine and wait till the engine warms and then look under the bonnet and on the ground under the engine to observer where the coolant is leaking from. Then you will be able to determine a possible fix.

My thermostat light comes on constantly blinking red, my car runs hot occasionally, it doesn't leak any fluids but i have to fill the coolant more often than normal. What are the possible problems?

You may not be able to see a leak because it may be a pressure leak. In other words it will only loose coolant while the engine is running and the system is under pressure. One other problem may be a leaking head gasket. If you notice white smoke or staem that stops shortly after starting this may be a problem. For a small pressure leak, try a contaner of bars leak in the radiator

I have a 2001 Chevy Blazer. While driving it and running the airconditioner I can smell coolant. I'm having to add coolant regularly, it's obviously leaking somewhere, but I don't see any on the ground or...

Maybe the coolant is leaking into a cylinder, slowly and also leaking out of the head gasket to the atmosphere when running under the increased load of the a/c.

If having to add coolant regularly, you're right, it must be leaking somewhere. It could be leaking out onto a hot part of the exhaust so look around there.

I don't have the owner's manual. The reservoir says ''Engine Coolant'' and it is empty; engine overheating. Is there a special fluid to use or can I just use plain water? Thanks

U need to use 50/50 mixture of long life/extendedlife coolant availible from any automotive parts store for around $8 per gallon. but you must have a leak, check for coolant leaking when the car is running, don't overheat this engine or u will blow the cylinder head gasket, a $1000.00 repair.

Coolant warning lights keeps coming on

Hello what i would do replace the fluid level run your car with the heater on hood up watch under your car for any fluid leaking if so try to determin about where it is coming from one of the hoses could have a small hole or a clamps not tight enough the right way is with a pressure checker but this is the best way for non proffesional rule out all hoses clamps and over flow bottle leaks before you start replacing parts goodluck please rate thanks
