My old 1989 mazda had this problem as well but i traded it in before figure it out. my new but old 1999 started doing the same. it was the ignition switch. if u do buy it, buy it from an autoparts store with a life time warranty. the dealer offers ****, 10k miles or 6 mths? it has only 2 or screws, bolt? to take out and should take no more then 30 minutes to replace. pop off the steering column covers and its located where you stick the key in. its a little white and black cylinder looking plastic thing. very tiny, fits in your hand. my car would do the same work fine for months, then **** out and die and then work perfect 2 hours later. the dealer charges 200-250 for the part the auto store 100?. after installing it may act weird.. your car idoling will be off for a bit. turn it off and on for 10-20 minutes, drive it around the block if you can. turn it off again etc. until it starts to idol mormal. i think the master computer thing built in it has to reset itself since you disconnected the battery earlier and have just installed a part tht requires electrical contact. my car does that when i replaced it twice already but then resumes to normal. try this option and see if anything happens, if not return the part and get your money back.

It's possibly for the timing to be off even if you line up the marks. If it have variable timing the the marks only are a reference. You need special tools to properly set up timing

What happens if car doesn't start after changing timing belt with a mazda protege 1999

If you did not have the bent valves replace then that may be the problem. If the belt has not broken then turning the engine over with the belt removed will bend valves. I suggest that you have a compression test done to eliminate the valve problem. Next is to recheck the cam shaft timing . next is to check the position and firing order of the distributor.

Fire to coil but no fire to plugs

Change the distributor cap and rotor. Just take off one wire at a time and swap them.

Hi! my name is Carlos I Have a Mazda Protege 99

Check the plugs for spark, pull one out and lay it on a metal part with the wire attached,, crank it over and see if it sparks, if yes, then squirt some fuel in the throttle and see if it fires, narrow it down to something. Check the oil, the electrical sensor in the header is an oxygen sensor, it will not effect the engine, If you don't have a spark, pull the coil pack off the old engine and bolt it on the new one. Check it out.

2001 mazda protege will not start

well, with all that you have changed the only two possible things that are left PCM and the ECM....

Do you have an alarm system on this vehicle? If you purchased this car second hand it may have something that is inhibiting the engine from firing. From what you have told us here that would be where I would start looking.

I really hope this is helpfull
