Hi,

If stickshift, you need a new clutch. If automatic, you need a trans rebuild. service first. Replace the air filter and fuel filter, and change the oil and oil filter. When you replace the fuel filter, fill it with diesel fuel additive, to clean out the injectors, then give it a good run so that it gets hot. Give it plenty of revs to clear out the system.
Hopefully you should then see a big improvement in performance. If not, then it's going to be a diesel specialist I'm afraid, as the injector pump
will need looking at.
And also Clean, inspect and, or, Replace your crank sensor or, crank sensor wiring A loose crank sensor bracket or, a start relay has caused this before .
Thanks for contacting Fixya

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem.
Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail with a fuel pressure testing gauge to see if it meets spec.

i had that problem on a 93 escort and it was because the woodruff key that holds the harmonic balancer in place was broken, the poopy acceleration was because the crank sensor gets its "signal" from cogs on the harmonic balancer, which did not turn at the same speed as the crank shaft because of the drag on the crank pully (crank pully and harmonic balancer are same part)
