Problem with voltage regulator, which is internal to the alternator. Ideal voltage is approximately 13.6 - 14.2 volts with vehicle running.

You changed the battery? Have the battery load tested with a carbon pile. The problem could be a bad cell in the battery IF that is not the case it could be an ECM issue. Alternators are internally regulated

Have the CPU checked, it has the regulator in it. It also controls the idle.

Overchanging alternater (ECU?)


The ECU has no control on the voltage. Does your vehicle have a separate voltage regulator? If so that's your fault. A lot of alternators have the regulator built into them. The alternator needs to be put on a test rig away from the vehicle and the output tested, this will eliminate the vehicle, You could disconnect the wiring to the alternator, run three fly leads to the alternator and to a separate battery and run the engine and test the voltage on the spare battery. Wire 1: Battery neg to case of alternator Wire 2: Battery pos to + terminal on alt (the thick wire) Wire 3: Battery pos through a 5 watt bulb to the ind terminal (ignition light) 17 volt will blow another battery for sure.

My voltmeter reads out 16/17 on my 94' Buick Park Ave. will this kill the battery?


Yes. Some voltmeters read higher volts when the voltmeter battery is low. Use a different voltmeter or put a fresh battery in the volt meter or test voltmeter against a known dc voltage to see if the reading is accurate. After this start thinking it is the alternator regulator.

Hi, what voltage is the alternator putting out? Put a voltmeter across the battery - it should be reading between 13.8 to 14.4volts. Any more than this and the regulator unit on the alternator is likely to be faulty. Normally a cheap fix

Ignition light staying on at idle put a volt meter on battery with motor going only 11 volts (is this a sfuffed alternator) ?


If you rev the engine with the voltmeter attached to the battery the voltage should rise to over 12 volts if the alternator is working.

Alternator only putting out 12 volts into bettery


Altenator should put out at least 13.8-14.2 volts at idle. If not either the altenator is bad or not getting the signal to turn on. More than likely a bad alternator though.
