1998 hyundai transmission will not go in reverse goes forward top speed 20 miles an hour transmission fluid burnt what to do just replace 8 months ago.

    is and was trans at correct oil level? any leaks? are or were there any warning lights coming on? sounds like you need new trans again any warranty on trans?

Transmission goes forward in reverse,neutral,actuall in all gears except park tranmission control solenoid has been changed

You have a serious mechanical failure in the transmission, it will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Intermittent Transmission slippage

You have a fatal problem with the transmission that will require it be removed and a rebuilt installed. You either have worn out clutch pack plates or the system is losing hydraulic pressure due to hard and leaking seals (common on high mileage car and trucks) You can try having the unit flushed of all the old fluid and also putting in a can of LUCAS brand transmission conditioner to soften up and seal internal leaks, it may work, but the cost will be about $150

make sure that you have the proper amount of transmission fluid. If the tran still has issues then it could just be that the gears on the inside of the transmission need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Can you tell me if a 97 dodge caravan transmission 3.3 will interchange with a 3.8. This is the trouble i have had and have decided to put in Transmission. Driving down the road and van sounded like it...

1. Yes the 3.3 and the 3.8 are the same bolt pattern. But the gear ratio in the differential might be different.

2. Did you replace the filter and put it back together? Does it do the same thing after you changed the filter? If it was an electrical issue with speed sensors or the solenoid pack, reverse would still work.

The correct fluid to put in a 1997 van is (ATF-3). Sounds like you need to make adjustment on both the forward and reverse bands of the transmission to correct your problem. The kickdown band (front) forward is located at the top (outside) of the transaxle near the front. To adjust the band,loosen the lock nut approximately 5 turns. With the lock nut loose the adjusting screw should turn freely in case. Tighten the adjustment screw with an inch lb. torque wrench to 72 in-lbs. Then back the screw out 2 1/4 turns, hold the screw in place and tighten the lock nut to 35 ft-lbs. Then after removeing the transmission pan and filter the low-reverse band is located next to the valve body. Loosen the lock nut 5 turns so the adjustment screw is free. Turn the adjustment screw in to 41 in-lbs, then back the screw out 3 1/2 turns. Hold the adjustment screw and tighten the lock nut 10 ft-lbs. Install transmission pan/with gasket and refill transaxle to proper level. Test drive van. Be safe and block the rear wheels before you raise the van and try to work under it. My 1998 Hyundai Elantra automatic will not go in reverse and slows down when driving forward...could somebody please tell me what's going on?

If you have not done so already, check the transmission fluid level. If you are low on fluid, there is a chance that adding fluid to the correct level may solve the problem. The fluid level should be checked with the car idling and the shift lever in neutral. There are two sets of Hi/Low marks on the transmission dipstick, one for Cold (car just started) and one for Hot (car running for 20 minutes or more). Use Hyundai recommended SPIII fluid. However, this does seem like a more serious transmission problem. Take the car to a qualified transmission mechanic.

Codes p1529, p0704. problem defined, and how to fix.

My wife's 2002 Hyundai Accent has developed the same p0734 code. I have researched this issue for weeks. Tried doing a soft drain of the black-burnt fluid until it finally drained red then changed oil filter. Have narrowed down exactly what is happenning. First off, it shifts fine all gears, up and down until transmission fluid heats up-about 10-15 miles. Actually it ran even further the last time-30 miles until I got on the interstate and hit 55. I was manully able to run by turning OD off and soft pedalling the gas when turning OD on. The problem may begin, after the fluid is hot I think when you kick the gas in overdrive or at the high speed the 4th gear can keep up the speed ratio, it can't take it over 50 at all. The car lurches and goes into safe 3rd gear mode with these issues. When I finally took the pan off, I found most all of the peices of a skinny ring about 1-1-1/1 inch diameter. This in itself may be the kiss of death but I think once the fluid burnt and parts started breakng down, a transmission replace is enevitable. I believe and correct me if I'm wrong, overheating of the fluid caused
the transmission breakdown. When I dropped the pan the fluid a drip burned my face but....the transmission cooler in front of the radiator was absolutely cold. Is this normal or is the cooler blocked up??? Or is there a circulator in the trans that broke and that is what the peices are from. I believe the broken pieces are from a pump part or bearng cover(4th)? Hyundai I found has the cheapest price for a trans now, around &1,250 as opposed to nearly $2,000 from Advance Auto. Hynudai insists you use THEIR fluid only so don't ever tell them you didn't, even though Valvoline is just find. Read you Warranties very careful these days. It is possible I read to take a top cover off the trans if you are a mechanic or ya know what your doing and can identify broken piece, maybe replace it. Otherwise...Well good luck. Hopefull the newer transmissions are better or we learn to take better care of our car's maintenance. They need health checkups just like us.
Don't forget, if the fluid is black, have someone flush the fluid cooler good or you will contaminate the new transmission.
