It means that when you ran the engine low on oil the pump cavitated causing the loss of oil pressure, the blood of the engine, so without the blood it breaks things like connecting rod bearings crankshaft bearings can bearings and th oil pump, take it to a shop, by tow truck and have them do an oil pressure test, if the oil pressure test is low then you have damaged the engine and it will have to be rebuilt. Of course there is always the possibility you got lucky, but that would never happen to me.

I have a 2008 civic that started making a tapping noise. It was low on oil. After adding oil, the tapping did not cease. Runs great, but noisy. Any thoughts?

A quart or 2 low shouldn't cause any problems or noises. You need to determine what part of the engine the noise is coming from, does it need a valve adjustment? Is the noise rhythmic, or is it random?

If I understand your situation, you are saying the engine was run with one quart and you added 2 more quarts of oil. Now you have 3 quarts which is less than what it takes to make it full. On some engines it takes 5 quarts of oil. You will have to check the dipstick to see where you are now compared to the full mark.

If it is still less than full, it may cause some noise, but depending on how long you ran it with the oil low, how hot it got and other unknowns, you may have a serious problem. Try adding oil to the fill mark and pray that after you run it awhile the noise will go away. The noise may be the lifters trying to work with little or no pressure. It is possible that after the oil top off and a bit of driving they may pressure up and start working again.

A howling noise in the rear end.

The final drive (diff) could be low or out of oil. Have a look around inside of the rear wheels for any oil leaks. Also ckeck the pinion seal. But get oil into the filler plug before you do anyting else.

Wow,
I think we have determined if the "oil" you saw as engine oil, yes I would say it was.
Sorry no easy solution. You may have a main crank shaft seal leaking, a engine oil coolant line, or a manifold gasket leak.
As far as the "grinding" noise I would like more detail. An engine that is very low on oil will sound more like a diesel... knocka knocka knocka.
Unless you are an experianced tech, I would take to a reliable auto center.

Usually the strut bearing will make this noise upon turning a corner and hitting a rut or pot hole when turning. A wheel bearing will make a low pitched whinning sound constantly

First thing you need to do is zero in on where the coolant is leaking out,and where oil is going. Sure sounding like a head gasket, or worse. What engine& mileage?
