Question about 2001 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

I have a 2001 European specs VW Golf 1600/16V engine. I keep getting the check engine lite. The car would not start untilled I replaced the ERG valve, Knock sensor and the oxygen sensor. after replacing these parts and reseting the ERG valve, once I got the error (P0171)that fuel too rich, the second time the error is fuel too poor. The RPM of the moter was not stable, it would go up and down. These parts have cost me over $800.00. What could be the problem? I need a machanic that can pin point the problem. The check engine lite is on again but the car runs fine. Before when I reseted the engine lite the car would not start or would die out at each stop and was very hard to start again. Thanks, Joe

Thanks to all of you. I have ensured that the gas cap it tight. The error this time is P0171 bank 1 to lean. the car runs fine now but the lite is still on. I hope to leave on vacation the 6 July and have lots of miles to cover aroung 700 round trip. can not afford to have a major break down on the highway.

Replace the Airflow Meter, then take off all those parts you put on. If you have a scan tool, the long term fuel trim is probably %25+Which is definately an airflow meter, but it's definately worth trying it anyway, they've had such a problem w/ them you can get one for under $100 easy.

I have 1998 vw golf timing belt broke put a belt on it and check timing and it is in time but will not start could val be bent

Most likely the valves are bent, VW engines are interference engines. Send the head to a reputable engine shop and have it thoroughly checked over. Make sure you replace the head bolts, they are not reusable.

I want specs for ATF. I have to change it because the current oil is really dirty. i have a vw golf 4

You do not even say what year your car is.

Ring the local VW dealer service people and they will tell you the correct spec AT fluid to use in your model and year of vehicle. The ATF spec can change from year to year depending on the model of Auto Trans used.

2001 VOLKSWAGON GOLF 2.0 L ENGINE KEEPS OVERHEATING,RAD NOT PLUGGED,FAN MODULE NEW

If you haven't replaced your water pump (composite impeller) to an aftermarket (metal impeller) then your heating problem lies in there. VW uses a plastic type impeller which cracks at the shaft connected to the pulley that drives it. When that happens, it might spin slower than engine speed or not at all. This will be a good time to do a timing belt service because it has to be removed out of the way in order to get to the water pump housing, so keep that in mind. Water pumps range from $69.95 - $89.95 from most VW internet shops that also offer free ground shipping.

VW Golf 2001, V4 Oil tank is empty approxi after 2000 miles

Because your car is consuming so much oil, you need to check the level often, so the level won't go down more than one quart. You will get an idea how long you can drive the car before it is down one quart, and should keep the level at the full mark. You should change the oil filter, as it is still collecting contaminants.
Have you checked the spark plugs condition? It seems the oil consumption will result in the plugs being fouled soon . Keep that oil level up, or the result will be a seized engine. Also, I'm guessing the tail pipe shows black residue, another sign of high oil consumption. This is probably why someone sold this car, they didn't want to deal with an expensive repair of an engine rebuild. You are correct, an oil change should be done every 3k miles.
