2001 Olds Silhouette overheating, please help

My 2001 Olds Silhouette is over heating. I can't get the radiator cap off because there's a big black bar in the way and I can't get my hand in there to get enough pressure on it. I kept filling up the coolant tank and it worked for awhile, but now after 5-10 minutes, it still overheats with the coolant tank filled. To my knmowledge, noithing is leaking either, nothing on the driveway anyway. I'm just guessing it might be the thermostat, but where is it located and how do I replace it? Any assistance would be very helpful, thanks

Jason

It have to be the thermostat if the water is still in the tank and the hoses on the radiator have all the pressure the water is not going in, replace the thermostat and you will be fine now the thermostat is located under the intake black hose the goes to the air filter ,take that off that way u would have enough room to get to it take the 2 screws off and is out. I hope that help you .

Did you check the oil to see if coolant was leaking into the oil (makes it light brown and milky)? do the fans come on when it overheats? the coolant has to be going somewhere. if it's overheating the coolant will expand and overflow out of the bottle.

2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette...Overheating, changed the thermostat, no signs of leaking, and the oil looks fine. At idle it takes 20 minutes to max the temperature gauge (red) and while driving it take

Usually the problem with no heat and overheating is low coolant, thermostat, or a faulty water pump impeller.
The radiator may not be full of liquid coolant, or the pump may not be moving the coolant thru the block.

You did not mention replacing the thermostat. That's the first thing to do. May I ask what prompted you to replace the intake gasket and radiator? Was this due to a previous overheating problem? MOre information will be helpful. Thanks.

My 02 silhouette just started having the same problem and I was told it was the head gasket. I was told mini vans with the 3.4 engine have this problem after a certain amount of miles. My brother has had this happen in 2 different vans with same engine. Hope this helps.

Lower intake manifold gasket leaking 02 Olds Silhouette

This is basicly a very time consuming job rather than a physically hard one to complete. In order to replace the gasket you must remove the intake plenum, throttle body, and misc. vacuum hoses. The wiring harness connections must also be disconnected. Finally the intake manifold is exposed. The bolts holding the manifold to the block are removed exposing the leaking gasket. After removing the push rods and placing them in the correct order to be replaced the gasket and sealants can be removed. Finally replace everything in reverse order. Be sure to consult a GM manual for correct bolt torch specs. The correct specs for the manifold bolts usually come with the gasket. Make sure to change your oil a few times after this job in case any coolant entered the block. Also, change the thermostat and the oil seal on the distributor half shaft cap while you have everything off. Good Luck

My Olds Silhoute is overheating...

I must say it is a curious problem, we recently got a used 2001 and have just had the same problem. The way it was heating up I felt it was the thermostat so changed that but didnt help. It appears that air pockets are causeing the over heating. On the thermostat houseing is a bleeder vaule which you can use to get the air out. It takes a little time to get all the air out but once I bleed the system out it seems to be fine now. Hope this helps

Rapidly rising temperature in 2000 Olds Silhouette

Could easliy be your water pump. The coolant in the radiator isn't being forced through the engine by the water pump causing the coolant to be cool and motor overheating. A thermostat can also cause this problem, but I belive it's the water pump.
