Spitting back through the Air filter is and indication of fuel starvation....Check for correct cam timing and ignition timing as well....2006, probably time for a fuel pump and fuel filter anyway.............
Fuel filter is most likely cause, these need replacing after a while.
Did you run the tank down to near empty? when this happens the debris at the bottom of fuel tank gets taken into the filter and blocks it.
I THINK THAT CAR ONLY HAVE INTERNAL FILTER IN THE FUELTANK THAT YOU CHANGE WHEN THE PUMP IS CHANGED,CHECK WITH TOYOTA FOR 100% ,BUT I DONT FIND FILTERS TO THAT CAR
1998-2008 Corolla has a timing chain. So, your 2001 Corolla does not require a timing belt change, since it does not have one. There is no prescribed replacement interval for a timing chain. your chain will run over 200000 miles or longer.
