Question about 1991 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

The ac compressor won't turn on. It looks like a fuse is blown somewhere, but I can't find any fuse for the AC compressor either in fuse box inside the cabin or the fuse box under the hood. Is there another fuse box?

Thanks, but the issue was not to see if the compressor was working. It is working, I tested as you suggest, so the thing is that somewhere the fuse is blown, and I couldn't find the fuse.

    But now I found it!

The fuse is behind the glove box. You have to take it apart (3 screws and one nut) there is not a fuse box per se. Is justa socket for 2 relays one "breaker" and to the side of these breaker there is this plastic thing, looks like another relay or resistor, is not, inside of this there are the 2 fuses. One 10 amps and one 20 amps, the 10 amps was blown, I just replaced and my AC is working again!

You can do a simple test, by looking at your AC pump, there sould be a electric clutch on the front of the pump, by connecting it ti shoudl activate the ac pump, if it works then is ok.

Please look online for the year and model of your vehicle. or forum

Fuse location of 1991 toyota pickup ac compressor

The fuse should be in the fuse box near the battery.
Keep in mind the low pressure switch has to be jumpered if the system is low to make the compressor come on.

Ac not working

Might be your AC clutch isn't kicking in(actuating).OR you might not have enough refrigerant in the system to tell the low-pressure cut-off to actuate the clutch.
Staying clear of the engine with any loose clothing, look down at the AC compressor while someone starts the engine and turns the dial from OFF to MAX air and you should be able to see the pulley end of the compressor grab and start pumping.
If it doesn't,it could need more refrigerant, but more likely it is a blown AC fuse or circuit breaker. There is sometimes a row of relays in a box in the engine compartment. They occasionally need replaced just like a fuse. don-ohio (:^)

If you do not have enough refrigerant in the system. The low pressure switch will prevent the compressor from engaging to avoid damage.

Check your pressure.

I don't recommend this, but you may need to jump your low pressure switch to get the compressor going to add more refrigerant to the system. But if your low on charge, it may be "best to take it to a shop to have them fill the system".

The air conditioning unit won't work. The lights behind the panel light up, and when I turn the air all the way to cold, you can hear a click like it wants to go on, but can't. Do you know how to...

Check the fuse block. Sounds like the compressor fuse is blown. Maybe a 32Amp. It's a biggie. Maybe looks like a black relay in the engine compartment on the left side along with an array of large fuses. You can check the fuse box inside the car as well, but those are controlling smaller items like lights. The big boys are in the engine compartment. Also check for loose wires around the AC compressor and make sure the belt is not broken or missing.

AC does not engage when turned on

Take the glove box out. Behind the fuse box you will find a big gob of black tape, (it looks like a box shape all taped up. Take the tape off and you will find three inline fuse holders taped together. The AC fuse is the 10 amp one.

There may be a fault in the control group in the dash--there is a resistor that controls motor speed as well as the speed switch.

Ac not blowing cold air

either you are out of refrigerant (means there is a leak) or the fuse is blown for the compressor clutch circuit. check your fuse box for any blown fuses first, then if your a/c is R134a get a gauge kit and check the pressure if you can get it to turn on. it should be 25-35psi. if your car is the older R12 system you will have to have it retro-fitted.
