why would that prevent it from down shifting? sorry if that is a retarded question but I am new to auto trannys

  • dozer8200 Jun 26, 2009

from a stop it will down shift from drive (it will drop down to first and take off) but in over drive if you hit the gas slowly it will chatter (the truck will lurch then stop lurch then stop) if you hit the gas hard the engine will just rev like its in neutral and it wont shift up into overdrive either. I did a little research and thought maybe it was the "castle washer" on the overdrive clutch pack. guess i will have to pull it apart and find out.

I will have to look but I think that in drive it applies the rear band and not in overdrive. In overdrive it relies on the rear one way. So I think you have a bad rear one way. But I'll look this up.

Sorry I didn't know you had a problem with downshifting. Does it also have late and harsh upshifts? Can you explain exactly what the truck is doing?

My ABS light came on, how long can I safely drive it before taking it in?

the ABS just prevents you from skidding, it does not affect the opperation of the brakes. So long as you dont slam on the breaks you will be fine, however it is always best to have all systems functioning properly.

the ABS light on my 2000 S-10 has been on for the last 15 months and I have never failed to stop.

Toyota avensis aternator broke now wont start

on newer models the battery is the main support for the vehicle, even the fuel. The brain has to function properly in order to make the rest of the car opperate. so have the alternater checked out and battery for a dead cell.If thats not the problem maybe the fuel pump is bad or the fuel filter is bad, butdon't think so .Your charging is the problem i'm sure, check that first

1989 ford ranger automatic transmission

Your truck has a A4LD transmission. The older ones had major problems. What i believe is happening with yours is the converter is locking up intermittently. 1st-4th are actual gears for 5th(overdrive) the converter locks. I had the same problem as well as did alot of people I spoke with. I solved it by getting a used A4LD out of a '92 ranger with a 3.0L motor (these transmissions had some upgrades to deal with a number of problems including the one you are talking about.) You will need to swap bell-housings (this requires the pump to be shimmed properly,I paid a shop $100 to install the pump ,with is attached to the back of the bell-housing) There are only 2 kinds of A4LD one for floor shift and 1 for column shift, make sure you get the right one.Good luck.

Wont shift to over drive

The reason it won't shift is because that plug isn't plugged in. It goes to the overdrive solenoid and the lock-up converter solenoid. I can likely tell you how to adapt it to make it work. What year is the transmission and what did it come out of? I know they are both A4LD transmissions but I can remember what year Ford changed the A4LD from the two wire connector to the three wire.

1992 A4LD trans problems.

Sounds like the shift kit is warn out in the transmission. The overdrive line may not be able to provide enough hydrolic pressure to engage the gears to move the truck. When you switch to regualr drive, that line is able to build the hydrolic pressure to engage the gears. At a certian speed (for the transmission, certian hydrolic pressure) there is enough pressure to engage the gears in overdrive, but go below that, and you have to start in drive again. If this is the case, there is no easy fix for that and I recomend taking it to a transmission shop to have your shift kit examined. Opening up an automatic transmission requires specalized tools, clean shop enviroment, and knowlage more then the average back yard machanic has.
