Question about 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix

3 Answers

Pontiac Shutdown I have a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 3.1 v6, at random times the car will shut either shut off or act as if it is running out of fuel then shut off while driving. I have replaced the altinator, starter, lower intakes gaskets and made sure there was fresh fuel in the tank. I am baffled, I have been told its the ignition module, cam sensor, crank sensor, and even the fuel filter.... The only ones that make sense to me would be the cam or crank sensor at this point because of the condition the engine was in when the intake gaskets blew.(Entire coolong system was in the crankcase)

Newer battery yes, like I said it starts back up but acts like its running out of fuel.

Update: While testing the fuel system, my normal reading is 35 PSI. When I pull the vaccum line from the regulator my fuel pressure goes to 45 PSI, When I pinch the fuel return line its goes over 50 PSI..... Would it be safe to drive without the regulator vaccum line plugged in as a temperary fix? Could my regulator be bad? Help me out here please...Im stuck with no More Monies....

It doesn't run bad before just afterwards..... I unplugged and reset the computer yesterday and it seems to be running fine at the moment, I'll test drive it again today.

I would start with the crank sensor. Have you scanned it for codes? When it dies will it start right back up or do you have to wait till it cools off?

Sounds like the fuel pressure is fine. Does it run bad before it dies. Autozone will scan for free.

94 Grand Prix - electrical issues

You have a corroded connection at the fuse block, remove it from the car and clean it, look for white powdery substance that indicates corrosion is present, use a little wire brush to it and blow it off with compressed air ( wire brush is available from Sears) if it still acts up after cleaning it you will need to think about replacing it with a used one.

Need to know the compression for a 3.1 Liter V6 engine (1996 Grand Prix)

It will vary too much between gauges to give you a definitive answer, probably between 150 and 175. The key thing you should be looking for is consistency. Crank the engine for the same amount of time for each cylinder, about 3 seconds. The readings should all be very close to each other, within about 15%.

Is there a special way to add coolant to the Grand PRix

I assume it's a V6, I know from working on Fords and when we would refill the radiator on a V6, we would take the upper hose loose from the radiator and back fill it that way. Hope this helps
