Question about 2002 Toyota Highlander

A/C is blowing much colder on passenger side

When the car is hot -- or has been sitting in the sun -- the a/c is hardly cold (and that's stretching it) on the driver's side. The passenger's side is fine. I find if I keep it the fan on low and/or close the outside vent to push all the air to the middle -- it slowly comes back to slightly cool. Seems as though something is allowing the heat to come through the vents. Anyone have any ideas. Compressor is rattling a little, but have been told they are two separate problems.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I took it to my mechanic and it only needed freon.

If it has dual climate control, the switch could be going bad. As for hardly cooling the compressor noise could be it going bad and maybe losing pressure. Some A/C shops will hook it up for free and at least tell you what they think may be wrong.

Suspect a blend door motor actuator that controls the door for hot/cold on the passenger side to be not working. These motors are usually electric and in some cases very hard to access for testing/replacement. In some cases the entire dash assembly must be removed for repair/replacement

1995 Lesabre blows hot on drivers side, cold on passenger side

THIS IS A GUESS. Both sides probabley have "mix" dampers that regulate temp by mixing hot and cold air to make you comfortable. Passenger side must not work properly, stepper motor? Dirty actuator? Temp sensor on passenger not working? Don't honestly know but I'm not sure a do it yourselfer could figure it out. Sounds complicated.
