Subaru liftgate lock stuck, liftgate won't close

One day, out of the blue, we opened the liftgate to our 2000 Subaru Legacy Outback, and when we tried to close it again, the latch was stuck and would not give around the lockbar. The door just would not close. We now hold it closed with a bungee cord from the rear wiper to the bottom of the bumper. Talked to an auto shop around here and they wanted $120 to diagnose the problem, and said the replacement lock would cost $240, not to mention the labor to re-install. HELP!

Thanks! It worked, but the "back door open" light on the drivers panel still shows that it's open. Any ideas?

It was great to get your response!!!!!!

You should open the tailgate and pull the handle and at the same time push the hook back so that it is not in the way of the lock bar when go to close it. Sounds like it just got jammed and should be able to be fixed with out having to replace. Assuming that it is not rusted and seized.

My 1999 subaru legacy outback (wagon) trunk won't open. I can hear the lock opening and closing but I can't get the trunk to open. Sometimes I try it like 50 times and maybe it opens...sometimes it opens...

This is very common. The hinge on the handle gets dirty and rusty and it does not return all the way. Push the handle all the way to the return position then unlock. It should open then. I use WD-40 on the hinges of the handle every 2 months to keep it free. Hope this helps and have a great day.

1996 Mercury Villager liftgate will not close. Tried moving latch (not stuck and appears to spring back), pushing in black 'lock' button next to latch, handle up and down, with key and automatically,...

Maybe the chasis lock (the "U" shaped ring that is located in the base of the trunk moved forward, try to loosen it (not completely) with a star screwdriver, move it backwards (maybe you will need a hammer to accomplish this), then tighten it again and check if it closes. If it does just check if the door seals completely, otherwise you may have to untighten the same part and move it a bit forward tighten it again and check wich is the best position where it closes & seals completely.

Drivers side door is stuck in the lock position

door handle probably broken ,usually the part of the handle that houses the rod that moves latch breaks, see if the outside handlehas less resistance than others when lifting it this is a pretty good indicator

Unfortunately, you will have to remove the panel of the door, Use flathead screwdriver to pry open. It is very likely the spring fell off.

2006 Subaru Outback Wagon Liftgate Actuator Not Working

I highly recommend that you purchase a Haynes service manual for your Outback; we don't have any vehicle without one. The number for your car is: 89101  I checked and found the liftgate described in sufficient detail to troubleshoot your problem. The Haynes manuals cost between $15-$30 US and you can often find the best price on eBay but if you check with any of the chain auto parts stores, you can probably find one before they close today.
I also suggest you buy a cheap digital multimeter for electrical testing. If in the US, Radio Shack has some under $20 US or if near a Harbor Freight tool store, they are under $10. Each of our vehicles has one in the glove box.
I checked the schematic (circuit diagram) for the liftgate actuator and there is no separate fuse for it, it is on the same circuit with the other door locks. There are however, two plugs in the line to the common wires so either of these could be either disconnected or corroded preventing current flow.   I have noticed a random problem with the lock/latch mechanism on ours; if the hatch is closed well enough to satisfy the warning circuit but not completely engaged, one can tug on the handle repeatedly without effect but pushing it forward will complete the latching sequence and then it opens easily; it clicks when happy.

The rear gate on 2004 Subaru Outback will not open with key or electric locks. How do I open the gate?.

Here is a quick try for you that works for me. Push the handle and make sure it is all the way returned to the closed position. Then try the lock, power or key. Then try and open. I have found that if the handle does not return to closed position it will not allow the lock to operate. Hope this helps and have a great day.
