No special tool after removing the 4x4 hub the big nut in the middle has a flat metal pin that slides into a slot inside the nut you can remove it with a magnet then the nut will come off easy

Replace front wheel bearings 99 ford explorer

not press fitted, standard tapered bearings, if 4X4 it is a little more involved, just dont misplace any of the smaller parts and you will be fine.

Front Brake disk repear\replacement

try going to real auto parts store not some chain franchise like pepboys or autozone ,with bolts means studs to a ford which will be a rotor with hub unit, and if it has just has holes then it's a slide on rotor or it needs to be pressed to your hub assembly, just go to a small parts store with someone who knows the difference,,2wheel or 4x4 makes all the difference.

Why won't the 4x4 kick in on the 1994 ford explorer

I have a 1992 4x4 eddiebauer edition and unless I was doing 25 miles an hour mine would not kick in either. For low range I had to put it in 1 on the gear shifter
