Question about 2001 Kia Spectra

Blower motor not always working

THe blower motor has been turning on and off at random times, for no seeming reason. For the last 3 weeks it hasn't been working at all. I already replaced the resistor, and changed the switch in the center console. The only possible problems left i can think of are the cable going from the switch to the blower motor, or the blower motor itself. However, i can take the motor out, and hotwire it to the battery, and it starts running, so i have no idea what it actually is.

The blower motor doesn't turn on at any speed setting. It used to start/stop going over bumps, but it doesn't do that at all anymore.

The fan isn't jammed against anything, as i've connected it outside of the housing, and turned the A/c on without the blower motor coming on.

Will try seeing if any of the wires are loose, but since most of them are running through the dash, i'm not sure how much i can do.

If the blower motor runs on full power from the battery, doesn't that mean the problem isn't with the motor though?

Testing with used (but working) parts, i have found that the dashboard switch seems to be good(turns the A/C on, but not the blower motor) the blower motor itself is good. The blowe motor resistor is working.

I have no idea what else it could be. any ideas?

I had a bad alternator, and i'm pretty sure it fried part of the electrical harness. Never confirmed though.

When wired to the battery it's getting full power.
so if the switch is set to anything but max it won't get full power. does it work on max?
does the fan stop and start over bumps? will it come on if you wiggle the wires? check those.
if there are no loose wires and the fan is not jammed in the heater box try a new motor.

the fan is most likely not the problem.

Your ignition switch is bogus. High speed runs directly off the speed control but the lower speeds go thru the ignition switch. Do not know why but that is the way it is!!!!!!!!
Replace the ignition switch and you will be back in business.

Blower motor only works on high position both for air and heater , was working fine until a week ago , checked fuses they seem ok help !

you have a bad blower motor resistor. They are nomally close to the blower motor on the passenger side under the dash. If you follow the wires from the blower motor it should lead you right to it.

there is a blower motor resister. it creates a lot of heat sometimes melting the electrical plug. check the plug for signs of melting and check the resister for deformation. Both parts can be purchased at rockauto.com

the blower not working on settings 1-3 is the blower motor resistor. this limits the power provided to the blower motor itself to change the speed. at setting 4 it is getting full power. since it quit on 4 also, i would still say the resistor needs to be replaced first, then see if the blower comes back. you may also need a blower motor. if you have a voltmeter you can just turn the switch to 4 and see if the motor is still getting 12 volts. if it is and doesn't run, it needs a blower motor too. if it's not, then its just the resistor

Likely either you have an intermittent short in the wiring, or, most likely, the blower motor itself is drawing too much amperage and is overloading the system. This can also happen if the blower motor or dash ground is not well connected or corroded.
