Question about 1999 Mitsubishi Diamante

1 Answer

My 1997 Mitsubishi Galant is having shifting problems. In overdrive it won't go past 50 mph. The car won't change gears smoothly, and shakes in drive if idle. The transmission was replaced 15 months ago and is now beyond warranty. I brought it to a mechanic who told me that the solenoid pack is shorted, and said that this means that the whole transmission must be replaced. He gave me an estimate of $1900. Is this right? Or can the solenoid pack be replaced without an entire transmission repair?

Remove the transmission pan and you will see the solenoids. They can be replaced without removing the transmission.

Galant does not shift to overdrive

I have an 02 Galant LS...I had the same problem with shifting and seemed to idle too fast. I changed out the idle air control motor located around the throttle body area. The car ran great after that. The problem is the IAC is a small plastic motor that will cost around 300 to 400 dollars. If that is the problem then buying a new rather than a used one is recommended.

I had a simular problem.
Ended up changing the themastat and the gears changed into overdrive when the temp. got to normal running.
Be carefull that you get right thermastat though. You want one that reaches the normal working Temp as soon as possable.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like the passing gear cable is out of adjustment. Get a shop manual and see what the specs are on how to adjust it properly. It is a pretty simple fix.
