Question about 1993 Mercury Cougar

Smoke is coming out of throttle body and dipstick tube after a few min of running, and after a few minutes of running, the engine seems to have a miss. Oil & filter, plugs, wires, cap & button have all been changed. i beleive the miss is caused by the coil. not quite sure though. ive ran a compression test, all is good there

2004 trailblazer sucking trans fluid into engine. I am a NISSAN Master tech. The Trans fluid is not on stick so I added 3 Qts truck would then drive up the driveway smoking like a fire. run 1 min.

Pure guess: you added the tranny fluid to the engine via the engine oil dipstick tube, thinking you were using the tranny dipstick tube. Not hard to make that mistake.
I'd drain engine oil immediately and check it. Can't think of any way for tranny fluid to get into combustion chamber. Good luck

Have 82 ford truck f150 runs for abut 5-15 mins than dies getin gas chang full pups two times same thant runs and die

Hmmm...maybe piston ring failure, valve seal failure, rich air/fuel mixture or maybe a head gasket (however that is normally white smoke due to coolant burning instead of oil). If it's so dark that it's almost blue then I can tell you that somehow oil is getting into the cylinder and burning alongside the air and fuel. Your best case scenario is that the engine is running rich (Rich:Too much fuel, Lean:Too much air) and the smoke is a dark grey to black color. CAUSES OF SMOKE

I have 2005 Trailblazer with the inline 6, after I drive it for a while seems to idol really low and the engine has quit running a couple of times, but it started right back up?? oh yah and sometimes seems...

Have you ever cleaned the throttle body? If not, remove, clean and replace the throttle body. Make sure you disconnect the battery for at least 30 min while cleaning the throttle body. This will allow the PCM to reset itself. It will have to re-learn for the first few trips you make, but will adjust to the newly clean throttle body.

It turns over but it will not stay running unless foot is on gas padal. White smoke is coming from tail pipe

Hi,
White smoke usually indicates a blown manifold gasket or head gasket. First, check for coolant in oil. When you pull the dipstick, is the level too high or have a foamy appearance? If so, blown head gasket. If not, spray starting fluid around intake manifold outer mating surface with engine running. ( not near throttle body or air intake) If motor revs up during procedure, locate that area you are spraying and duplicate the motor rev up. If consistent, blown intake manifold gasket. Its always good to have codes checked first if you have a check engine light illuminated....Mike

I have a dodge mini caravan 2000. When i start the car the key wont start the engine. This seems only to happen when its really cold out side. It takes quite a few tries to get it to start.

As A Chrysler Tech for 14 years, this seems to be a minor prob with the throttle body dirty behind the plate. The best is to remove it and give a good cleaning to it, But with the engine not running take the intake tube off the body , open the throttle and with a rag and some carb cleaner wipe the inside out. NO SMOKING HERE EITHER!!! It may take a few time but will show good results. This will correct a start/stall prob in the summer time too. Hope this helps ya.

Where do I spray the starter fluid (air intake?) for Chrysler Silhouette. Ran out of gas and it seems carburetor needs starter fluid to kick it..not sure where air intake is locater.. or where to open carb...

there is a large tube that goes to your throttle body (you do not have a carb), remove it and spray there-be careful, starter fluid is highly explosive, spray 2 or 3 short bursts into the top of the throttle body opening, and install the tube (you don't have to tighten the clamp). You may have to repeat this a few times, if you can only get the car to run for a few seconds 3 or 4 times, and it will not run on it's own, you have a fuel delivery problem, and no amount of starter fluid is going to fix it.

Good chance that the idle Air Control (IAC) valve is dirty with carbon and needs to be cleaned. You can clean it by cleaning the in side of the throttle body with Throttle body cleaner (follow the instructions on the can), you can pick up a can at any parts store like Auto Zone. Disconnect the air intake tube from the Throttle body and spray the cleaner throughout the throttle body, make sue your clean the throttle blade and IAC passage way. Once your done with cleaning the throttle body and IAC passage way, just make sure you spray enough through the IAC passage way to ensure you get the IAC cleaned also. Once everything is cleaned, put everything back together and turn the ignition to the run position for 30 seconds and then turn it off for 10 seconds and then start the car, this will reset the IAC and if there is lots of smoke coming from the tail pipe. That.s normal, it's just residual cleaner and carbon burning off and will take no more then 10 min. This should clear up the problem, but check the wire leads to the IAC on the side of the throttle body for any damages like corrosion and after cleaning the IAC problem is still there. The IAC will need to be replaced, but i don't think so, since you did not mentioned any check engine lights on. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to know your car is running 100% again soon.

My idle is running as high as 3000 rpm while driving. When stopped it sometimes comes back to normal. I suspect idle control valve????

It could also be carbon build up on the throttle body, but regardless the cure is the same. Your going to need to clean the throttle body and the idle air control valve (IAC). With a can of throttle body cleaner, (follow instruction on the can) clean the throttle body blade and the IAC passage way in the throttle body. Once the throttle body is cleaned, with the engine off, turn the ignition key to the on position (engine not running) and wait for 30 seconds and then turn if off for 10 seconds and then start it. This should reset the IAC, if it did not work do it again and see if it helps. If not clean out the IAC passage way again. The turning on and off the ignition reset's the IAC and it may still be stuck with carbon build up. Once the engine has started, Note there will be lots of smoke form the tail pipe, that's normal. It's just the left over throttle body cleaner and carbon being burn off, take's not more then 10 min to burn off. Good luck and this should keep you from replacing the IAC. Oh and don't use Carb cleaner, Carb cleaner is to corrosive to the throttle body gasket.
