Question about 1991 Honda Prelude

1 Answer

I'm the blue smoke and exhaust fume girl, 1 more question????

To baddealer, pghpaguy, and aklarichjr, I'm getting rid of the car but I have a guy friend of mine (Mr. know it all!!) is telling me I'm an idiot for getting rid of the car, he says
it just needs a fuel pump and
you're going to be sorry cause
you're going to see that someone
else will replace that and you'll be watching it being driven around for months and you'll be sorry! He's helped me
a lot in the past w/ problems,
but there's no chance it's the fuel pump causing the blue
smoke becuase if it was, you guys would have brought it up, right? Becuae this is going to cause a war between me and him.
Before I get rid of it, just want
to make sure it's not the fuel pump????? I believe you guys!
Thanks
Deb

Car lost power uphill with air on and was hard to start once. blue exhaust smoke when reved up otherwise runs good

Blue smoke is not good!! Piston rings are bad or valves. On a Mercedes it will cost you more than the car is worth at this point. Unless you have a sentimental attachment to the car and really really want to keep it., I would get rid of it. 123,000 mile is a great life for a 1989.

Engine concern

Smoke (blue or black) or steam (white)? White smoke is really steam that is caused by water leaking onto hot surface. Could be leaking from hose running to heater coil under dash, or something else. Check radiator water level to make sure water level is ok. Blue smoke is oil burning. This could be dangerous, caused by similar scenario of oil leaking on a hot surface (from a gasket leak, etc), or exhaust fumes. Black smoke means something is actually burning and could indicate fire. Black or blue some could fill vehicle cabin with toxic fumes, even if you don't smell anything bad.

Smoking

I question the thinking of your mehcanic, the exhaust has odorless cumulatively POISIONOUS Carbon monoxide, smell testing went out in the 50s.

The questions are: is it consuming oil, is it running rich, any error codes? How is fuel mileage? What are the exhaust readings? The answers to these dicate the next step.

When starting vehicle was getting just a *** of blue/white smoke from exhaust after driving a few miles it has turned into a smoke machine billowing sblueish smoke from exhaust this is a not turbo engine.

Blue smoke from the exhaust is cause by coolant\water mixing in the combustion chamber. The smoke will also have a sweet smell to it. A simple way to confirm this is to check your coolant level. Also if you take the radiator cap off while the engine is running you should get exhaust fumes coming out since the mixing will be both ways. Although this is not always the case the coolant can mix with the engine oil as well so check that as well. The oil will have a milky brown color to it.
There are several things that can cause this but the most common is a blown head gasket. It could also include a warped or cracked head as well.

This usually happens after the engine overheated for a prolonged period of time.

You should get this taken care of A.S.A.P.
Hope this helps and good luck.
Please let me know if you need anything else.

Blue smoke from exhaust

Most likely the engine is worn to the point that it is using too much oil. Will not pass inspection. No real fix, unless it is valve stem seals.

I have blue smoke coming out of exhaust. . everyone's telling the rings are going bad in the motor and I should get rid of it. Could it be from a clogged catalytic converter? The guy who works on car tried...

The blue smoke and oil consumption is because of the bad rings. They are allowing oil to get by into the cylinders and it's being burned with the gas. If you don't want to put the money into an engine rebuild, you can try one of the many additives available at auto parts stores that claim to help restore compression and reduce oil burning in worn or high-mileage engines.

Black smoke from exhaust

this guy is wrong. Black smoke means to rich[to much fuel]. Your motor is not shot. Something is wrong with the engine management[sensor]. White or blue smoke is a fatal problem.
