How many km's can a 2001 Alero take before it's a write off?

I am looking into buying a 2001 Alero and i can't seem to find any information about Km's. The cars I am looking at are about 195kms... how long does an alero last?

How long the Alero lasts depends entirely on its service history. I assume you mean it has 195,000 kms which is around 121,000 miles and not 195 kms?

You can use this converter to make conversion comparisons between miles and kilometers.

On any car showing this amount of mileage it is absolutely vital that it has a fully recorded and verifiable service history. If not - walk away plain and simple.

I would be very wary of it achieving that kind of mileage without some major mechanical issue along the way to be honest. You might want to take a look at these owners reviews and it appears to be a very mixed bag with a lot of owners complaining about reliability etc.. even on much lower mileage vehicles.

To be honest the only cars I would put under my consideration with that kind of mileage and expect any kind of longevity would be a) Japanese - Toyota/Honda/Lexus etc or b) Diesel engined car - any make but preferably VW/Audi (huge rep for reliability and longevity up to 350,000 miles or 550,000 kms on these engines if properly serviced!!)

I have a 1999 Olds Alero (3400 engine) with 307,400 miles on her. She's running just as nice as the day she left the showroom, A healthy diet of regular maintenance and minimal repair is all I've had to invest. You just can't beat Detroit (Make that Lansing), MI. iron. The only complaint I have is the wrinkled dash (sun) and rust on the bottom edge of the rear doors. 'Still, I expect to easily get another 100,000 to 200,000 miles on the clock before she sees the scrapyard.

IT SEEMS THAT YOUR TAIL LIGHT BULBS ARE BLOWN, DO YOUR TURN SIGNALS FLASH FASTER THAN NORMAL ? IF SO IT IS FOR SURE THE REAR BULBS. TO REPLACE THE BULBS,LOOK IN THE TRUNK,& YOU WILL EITHER SEE SOME BLACK T HANDLE NUTS OR 10 OR 11 MM NUTS, THAT HOLD THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY IN TAKE THE NUTS OFF,& CAREFULLY PULL THE ASSEMBLY OUT ,YOU WILL SEE THE SOCKETS, SOME HAVE A LITTLE CATCH ON THEN LIKE A GALLON ANTIFREEZE JUG HAS THAT YOU HAVE TO PUSH IN,&THEN TWIST & OTHERS JUST TWIST OUT,IT SHOULD TAKE EITHER A 3157 OR 3057,BULB, BUT CHECK TO SEE FOR SURE AT THE AUTO PARTS WHERE YOU BUY THE BULBS.

2001 Olds Alero will act **** when switching gears

My car does the same thing. I wondered that myself, I don't think that's what it is though, I don't think you have an issue with the transmission. Your car has TWO check engine lights, and with the Alero--if there is an issue with the transmission one of the lights will come on. I am not 100% positive of this, but I had a 1999 Bravada (Olds) and it did do that when I had a tranny issue.

I notice when I drive my 2001 Alero my right leg gets SORE from pushing the pedal so hard. I think it is age, not the transmission.

READ YOUR SERVICE MANUALS. I don't get why people ignore them, honestly they have a wealth of information in them...could have saved a lot of people lots of money when people started claiming their car wouldn't start when it was a security feature that is listed in the manual that came with the book.

Replace bulbs, one of them is probally bad. Worked on a lot of cars, but my daughter 2001 alero showed me. The car had the same problem, bulbs looked good but one wasn't and that's all it took. Try brand new known to be good bulbs. Ed

Flash signal

Hi,

To my knowledge the turn signal flasher for a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero is part of the Hazard Flashing switch. It is actually a 4 way flasher unit in one assembly.

Additionally, there was a recall order for 1999-2002 Alero models due to electrical issues which includes signal lights. You can try calling Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537. The Ref. No. is 04098A issued Jan. 11, 2006. Accordingly, the repairs will be made at no charge to the customer. The special policy covers warranty repair (for such problems) for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
