A loud knocking noise like you've described if it's in the lower end of the engine, is usually a Crankshaft Rod Bearing. If the knocking noise is in the top end of the engine, it is usually a lifter or a rocker arm. Either one doesn't sound good and can be expensive. You can continue driving until it stops completely or you can do as the autozone suggested and use an oil thickner such as STP although none of them work very long or quiet them down for long.
it could be a big end bearing i dont know where the knocking sound is comeing from but if it is your piston and conrod may be comeing loose then by that time u may need a new moter but can be repaird at a less cost u should not be driveing at all
Loud knocking is a sign of internal engine damage-probably a loose piston rod from bad crankshaft bearings. It means rebuild time for the engine-major overhaul required. Cheaper to find a used engine.
First when was the engine tuned up last ? is it using oil ? How many miles are on the engine. The knock you are hearing is it up top or louder under the car. Need more information. you could spin the oil filter off and cut it apart and see whats on the paper part of the filter. if there are metal flakes then you have something failing inside the engine.
If you are hearing a loud "knock" and it is coming from the bottom of the engine you probably have a bad crankshaft bearing(s) which means engine rebuild or replacement.
hi,the first thing to do is an engine flush, then refill with10/40 or 20/50 oil, semi sythetic, not forgeting to change the filter.this particular engine is quite loud but the noise should die down after about 15/20 secs if its tappy.i would also reccomend adding wynns or another oil additive to help the self adjusting tappets quiten down.An oil blockage would show up as a loud knock (big end rumble)and the oil warning light would show on the dash.
after you do the oil change rev the engine to 3000 for 30 secs.this will help to get the tappets right.
Hi it sounds like the thermostat is broken, do not keep diving it as it will destroy the engine, is the knocking more like a ticking sound? or a loud bang type knock?
take off the oil cap and check for any yellow gunk, if you see that then the head gasket has gone, sometimes you can still drive them for a few weeks before you see this but do take a look.
It all depends how loud the knock is. A tapping valve can be caused by low oil level, or dirty oil. Topping up or changing oil will solve the problem. A really loud valve tapping is abnormal. Cars sometimes make what you call a spark knock when accelerating hard. Extremely loud knock coming from deep within the engine is a bad sign, which means the engine has failed. Further examination would reveal metallic residue on the dipstick.
I'd consider some fresh, clean oil & filter change first of all, if it hasn't been done . drive it for a while providing it isn't too bad, & see if it goes away, if not get back to us.
