Possibly water in the tank and some other contaminant in the tank....possibly failing...clean filter is easing flow and pressure function from your fuel pump.

Your fuel pump relay may be going bad, you can find that in the glove box behind a panel that say's relays. The middle relay is the fuel pump, you can swap out the relay with one of the other ones and see if there if you still have the problem. The other thing to is the wire harness from the frame on the driver's side to the gas tank for the fuel sending unit may have gone bad due to corrosion. As the fuel pump draws current to keep it running, the wires heat up and the wire may break the contacts till it cools of and same as the fuel pump, as it heats up it may fail till it cools down. If you still have the original fuel pump it may be at the end of it's life. The fuel pump is only good for 150,000 miles (250,000 km) and then any mileage after that is borrowed time. Check the fuel pressure at the shredder valve along the fuel line by the distributor drivers side, it should be 60psi to 65psi during prime with the engine not running. With the engine running it will drop about 5psi. Any other readings will give you a no start or poor performance. Good luck and hope this helps. keep me posted and try to get the truck scanned for DTC codes, Auto Zone scan free of charge and most larger auto parts store scan free of charge also.

You need to clean the IAC again and also the throttle valve and bore, use only CRC brand Throttle body cleaner. After they are thoroughly cleaned disconnect the battery for 5 min's and then drive the car in varying condition for a few days. If that doesn't cure the issue you have more serious problems and will need a scan tool to look into the readings from the MAF, TPS and ECT sensors. High idle cold start is normal then slowly dropping after a few minutes. I assume you never had a check engine light. Correct?

Transmission dip stick keeps popping out

check trans. fluid level per owners manual. The high operating temperatures cause fluid to expand greatly,an over-filled transmission can actually force excess fluid out of the dip stick tube.check level with trans. hot, engine running in park on a level surface. After driving, place shifter in park, hold brake and move shifter through all gears and back to park.remove dipstick, wipe clean,re-insert and check fluid level.normally, trans fluid & filter should be changed +/- 100 k miles

My 1996 0lds cutlass has been parked for 1 year and now it is smoking it was fine b-4 I parked it. any ideas

probably needs a good workout to lubricate all the seals again...drive it around the block a couple times and slowly work it back up to highway speeds...seals and gaskets can dry out and contract over time if not lubricated or pressurized by a running engine. next time you have to park your car for an extended period have somebody start the engine once every couple of weeks and run it for 10-20 mins.

try resetting your computers. this is very easy to do. pull your negative termal for about 30 mins. put it back on then let the car idle in park neutral then drive then if it's an option with out your over drive then back in nutral. do each for a min. if it's a manual make sure your e brake is on and skip park.
