Most likely cause is the solenoid on the starter motor making the clicking sound. I would first double check that all earth leads are sound and tight. Also check the main engine earth strap to the car body is good. Unfortunately it may well indicate that the solenoid or starter is indeed on its way out.

My 2002 buick regal cranks when it wants to i can try to crank it and the car will not make a sound but after several attemps the car will sometimes start

could be the starter solenoid is going south or also an ignition could be a culprit. try to duplicate the condition and gently tap the side of the starter with a hammer while someone else holds the key over in the start position. be careful while doing this. if the starter turns when you tap it, the brushes inside the starter itself are gone and the starter needs replacing.

Car makes clicking sound when i try to crank it

the rapid loud clicking sound is the solenoid on your starter motor. usually indicating that the starter motor is defective or the battery needs charging or replacing at this time of year older batteries tend to die due to the cold.

1 test battery, look at battery and see if it has a window on top if so see if it is green if not it most likely needs replacing, test by switching on headlights and then trying to start the car if the lights dim or go out when you turn the key this indicates the battery is bad, if the lights stay bright this indicates a problem with your starter motor.

I hope this was helpful.

When i turn my key all i hear is a click is that my starter?

A single click is the solenoid on the starter engaging. This is a pretty typical symptom of a bad starter if everything else seems normal.

Rapid repeated clicking while the key is in the crank position is a good sign the battery is to weak to turn the engine over.

Back to the single click. Try turning the key to the crank position rapidly and repeatedly. Sometimes this will make the starter work wich will also confirm that it is bad.

2002 ford ranger quit running on highway, pulled over tried to start but wouldn't crank over, starter just clicked like a dead battery. thought alternator died then drained battery. today jumped battery,...

If the starter is just clicking, then it is not,but if the starter is kicking the starter drive out,and that is the noise you are hearing then it might be,turn the crank pulley with a socket and ratchet ,clock wise,if it turns then this is not the problem, make sure the ground to the engine is good,if the ground cable has gone bad, this will happen.

2002 Ford Escape V6 XLT, problem w/ initial start in cold weather

Does the engine crank but just not start? Or... are you cycling the ignition switch without trying to crank the engine? Based on the information you have given, I would first guess that the fuel pump may be going out. I say this because when you first turn the key on the pump primes the engine with pressurized fuel. If the pump is getting old, it may take a few power cycles to get it going. You can test this theory by having somebody listen near the rear of the car while you turn the key on for the first time. The fuel pump make a faint, yet distinctive high pitch noise that can be heard when you turn the key on. Try that first. Next thing you would try is checking the relays for proper function... starting with the fuel pump relay. Good luck.

Ford f150 1988 4.9 cranks but doesnt start

If you are getting fuel and spark, than it probably is either a bad ground, or the TPS sensor itself.

Engine will not turn over, makes a clicking or rapid clicking sound

you are correct it is the starter the clicking you hear is the bedix wheel which spins the flywhell to crank the engine. replace the starter and this will solve the problem

Starter clicks rapidly, not cranking, no ignition

It almost sounds like you have a loose connection at the battery. If the connection is loose it can cause the starter to click as you have described. Also it could be the starter itself. If the starter is bad (locked up) it can make the clicking noise and not start the engine. If you can get to the starter, try to tap on it with a hammer while someone is trying to start the engine. I hope this helps.
